The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug nimesulide kills Gyps vultures at concentrations found in the muscle of treated cattle

Toby H. Galligan et al.

Summary: Cattle in South Asia are regularly treated with NSAIDs, leading to widespread mortality and catastrophic population declines in vultures. The NSAID diclofenac is now banned, but other NSAIDs like nimesulide have been found to be toxic to vultures. Testing showed that vultures died after being exposed to nimesulide, indicating the need for an immediate ban to ensure the survival of Critically Endangered vultures in South Asia.

Developmental alterations, teratogenic effects, and oxidative disruption induced by ibuprofen, aluminum, and their binary mixture on Danio rerio

Livier M. Sanchez-Aceves et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that ibuprofen and aluminum are widely present in the aquatic environment and have toxic effects on aquatic species. Exposure of zebrafish embryos to these substances individually and as a mixture resulted in developmental defects, teratogenic effects, and increased oxidative stress. The mixture of ibuprofen and aluminum also caused delays in embryonic development.

A signal-on photoelectrochemical aptasensor for chloramphenicol assay based on 3D self-supporting AgI/Ag/BiOI Z-scheme heterojunction arrays

Jian-Hong Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel signal-on PEC aptasensor was developed for highly sensitive and selective detection of chloramphenicol. The sensor achieved a wide linear range of 2-250 nM and a low limit of detection of 0.226 nM through the combination of 3D self-supporting AgI/Ag/BiOI Z-scheme heterojunction arrays and BCP signal amplification strategy. This work opens up new possibilities for PEC aptasensing technology and demonstrates potential for bioanalysis of environmental samples.

The veterinary use of diclofenac and vulture conservation in Spain: Updated evidence and socio-ecological implications

Ruben Moreno-Opo et al.

Summary: Diclofenac, a NSAID used in livestock farming, had lethal effects on vultures in Southern Asia until it was banned in 2006. After its authorization in Spain in 2013, measures were taken to monitor and mitigate its impact on European vulture populations, showing successful outcomes despite one lethal incident in 2020. Discussions on the differences in the veterinary use of diclofenac between Southern Asia and Spain are prompted, with proposed surveillance priorities and future prospects to prevent risks from using diclofenac and other harmful NSAIDs like flunixin.
