Characterization of neurotransmitters and related metabolites in Daphnia magna juveniles deficient in serotonin and exposed to neuroactive chemicals that affect its behavior: A targeted LC-MS/MS method

Inmaculada Fuertes et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to develop an accurate analysis method for neurotransmitters in Daphnia magna. The results showed how neurotransmitter systems in D. magna are affected by chemical compounds, validating the importance of analyzing neurotransmitter levels in environmental neurotoxicity studies.

Aqueous stability and degradation of psychiatric and neuroactive compounds and its biological activity in Daphnia magna

Marina Bellot et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the stability of 17 neuroactive compounds in water and found that most compounds did not degrade, except for apomorphine and 6-hydroxydopamine which degraded completely within 24 hours. Most compounds altered motile responses to light in the crustacean Daphnia magna.

Pharmacological modulation of fish-induced depth selection in D. magna: the role of cholinergic and GABAergic signalling

Juliette Bedrossiantz et al.

Summary: Animal behavior is closely linked to individual fitness, with the central nervous system playing a crucial role in regulating responses to stimuli. This study investigated the neurotransmitter systems that modulate phototactic behavior in the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna in response to fish kairomones. Results showed that neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine, and GABA play important roles in mediating behavioral responses to fish kairomones in D. magna.

The Role of Behavioral Ecotoxicology in Environmental Protection

Alex T. Ford et al.

Summary: Chemicals have long been acknowledged to impact human and wildlife behavior. Recent technological advancements have highlighted the adverse effects of contaminants on organismal behavior and ecological outcomes. Concerns about the lack of consideration of behavior in regulatory ecotoxicology have led to the exclusion of many studies from chemical risk assessments. A workshop with international representatives has resulted in consensus perspectives and recommendations to improve the integration of basic and translational sciences with regulatory practices.

Comprehensive Characterization of 76 Pharmaceuticals and Metabolites in Wastewater by LC-MS/MS

Cristian Gomez-Canela et al.

Summary: Wastewaters are a major source of pollution in aquatic environments, releasing a high number of contaminants daily. This study developed an analytical method using solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to MS/MS to determine 76 pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in wastewater. The study provides comprehensive optimization of MS conditions for the detection and identification of pharmaceutical compounds in water.
