Do pollutant discharge fees affect labor demand? evidence from china's industrial enterprises

Jiaman Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of pollutant discharge fees on labor demand in Chinese manufacturing enterprises using enterprise-level and city-level datasets from 1999 to 2012. The results show that stricter pollutant discharge fees can significantly reduce labor demand, especially in cities with a low proportion of secondary industries, industries with low pollution intensity, and domestic private-owned enterprises. Labor cost and energy cost effects are significant mediators, while equipment cost effect is not significant. These findings can provide policy implications for improving environmental protection taxes.

The long term effects of carbon trading markets in China: Evidence from energy intensive industries

Ruipeng Tan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that carbon emissions trading scheme can reduce CO2 emissions, improve production efficiency, and stimulate firms to increase research and development input. However, achieving a win-win situation of reducing emissions and promoting economic development simultaneously requires external technological breakthrough.

Environmental regulation, green technology innovation, and industrial structure upgrading: The road to the green transformation of Chinese cities

Kerui Du et al.

Summary: The study finds that the impact of environmental regulation on green technology innovation and industrial structure is related to economic development levels, with a low economic development level potentially inhibiting green technology innovation, but having an insignificant impact on industrial structure upgrading; as economic development levels grow, the impact of environmental regulation on green technology innovation and industrial structure weakens; when economic development levels are high, environmental regulation significantly promotes green technology innovation and industrial structure upgrading.

Heterogeneous green innovations and carbon emission performance: Evidence at China's city level

Le Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of green innovation on carbon emission performance in China and finds a positive effect, as well as identifying four potential transmission channels of green innovation affecting carbon emission performance. Different types of green innovations have heterogeneous effects on carbon emission performance in cities, with the existence of a snowball effect and symbiotic effect.

Has central environmental protection inspection improved air quality? Evidence from 291 Chinese cities

Jiayi Lin et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of CEPI on air quality governance performance of Chinese local governments through a difference-in-differences approach and finds that CEPI significantly reduces pollutant concentrations and increases O3 concentration. Qualitative evidence also demonstrates that CEPI promotes environmental protection performance through campaign-oriented governance within the hierarchical system.

Summary: The study finds that Chinese-style fiscal decentralization and vertical fiscal imbalance have a negative impact on energy and environmental performance, especially in the eastern and economically developed regions. Different fiscal compensation methods also have varying effects on vertical fiscal imbalance.

Wage distortion and green technological progress: A directed technological progress perspective

Zhenbing Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that green technological progress in China's industrial sector continued to rise, but the progress in manufacturing sub-sectors was relatively slow. The widespread wage distortion and its impact on the direction of green technological progress were identified as important factors influencing the rate of progress in different sub-sectors.

Centralization or decentralization? the impact of different distributions of authority on China's environmental regulation

Xiaohui Yang et al.

Summary: The debate on balancing the political authority of the central government and local governments in environmental governance has been ongoing in China. The central government needs to find a balance between environmental protection and economic growth pressures. Our research suggests that a hybrid model of centralized and decentralized environmental governance may help reduce agency costs and local government-firm collusion.

The spatial spillover effect and nonlinear relationship analysis between environmental decentralization, government corruption and air pollution: Evidence from China

Yu Hao et al.

Summary: The massive development of the Chinese economy is hindered by the deteriorating air pollution problem. Environmental decentralization has a significant inhibitory effect on air pollution, but this effect is weakened by the problem of local government corruption. The corruption problem, both locally and in neighboring provinces, significantly deteriorates air quality.

Assessing the impact of tradable discharge permit on pollution reduction and innovation: micro-evidence from Chinese industrial enterprises

Maogang Tang et al.

Summary: The tradable discharge permit system has a positive impact on pollution reduction and pollution intensity reduction, but not on innovation. Enterprises tend to achieve environmental protection through end-of-pipe control or reduced output rather than through technological innovation. Additionally, high transaction costs hinder the incentive effect of the system on promoting enterprise innovation.

Can environmental centralization help reduce pollution? Evidence from an administrative reform in China

Weibing Li et al.

Summary: This study finds that environmental centralization, exemplified by the establishment of the Ministry of Environmental Protection in China, effectively reduces pollution in provinces with higher degrees of environmental decentralization. Centralization restrains free-riding behavior of local governments, reduces emissions, and boosts local governments' incentives for environmental governance, thus contributing to environmental well-being.

The impact of government-enterprise collusion on environmental pollution in China

Kai Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that collusion between government and enterprises has a significant impact on SO2 emissions, especially in cities with longer terms for regional officials, foreign-owned or small-scale enterprises, and labor-intensive industries. Adjustments to existing environment and personnel management policies in China are needed for more sustainable development.
