Pesticides are the dominant stressors for vulnerable insects in lowland streams

Matthias Liess et al.

Summary: Agricultural nonpointsource pesticide pollution is a major driver in reducing vulnerable insect populations in aquatic invertebrate communities, exceeding the relevance of other anthropogenic stressors. The current authorization of pesticides underestimates the actual ecological risk and needs to include monitoring-derived information on pesticide effects at the ecosystem level for adequate environmental quality objectives.

Evidence for antifouling biocides as one of the limiting factors for the recovery of macrophyte communities in lakes of Schleswig-Holstein

Oliver Machate et al.

Summary: The study found that toxic pressure from sediment contamination with antifouling biocides is one of the limiting factors for the recovery of macrophyte communities in impaired lakes of Schleswig-Holstein. This is in line with a Europe-wide survey on almost 47,000 sites suggesting that contamination exceeding toxicity thresholds prevents the observation of a good ecological status in those sites.

Water quality and ecological risks in European surface waters ? Monitoring improves while water quality decreases

Jakob Wolfram et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the environmental risks for aquatic species in Europe based on surface water monitoring data from 31 European countries. It found an increase in contaminants in recent years, with pesticides being identified as the main risk drivers and aquatic invertebrates being most at risk. The study also highlighted the need for continued improvements in monitoring data quality and environmental assessments to protect aquatic ecosystem integrity.
