Microplastics in glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau: Evidence for the long-range transport of microplastics

Yulan Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been detected in glacier surface snow on the Tibetan Plateau, indicating long-distance transport of microplastics to the region. This evidence is significant for understanding the atmospheric transport of microplastics to the Tibetan Plateau and provides a global perspective on the microplastic cycle.

Atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the coastal zone: Characteristics and relationship with meteorological factors

Karolina Szewc et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the quantitative and qualitative compositions of microplastics deposited from the atmosphere in the coastal zone, and investigated the links with meteorological factors. The deposited microplastics were predominantly fibers, with smaller size classes dominating and mainly originating from textiles, packaging materials, and fishing gear. Air mass trajectory analysis showed that microplastics deposited in Gdynia mainly came from local sources.

Natural depolymerization of waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) by neutral hydrolysis in marine water

Dorin Stanica-Ezeanu et al.

Summary: PET, widely used in food packaging and fishing nets, can be efficiently depolymerized by hydrolysis in marine waters. Metal ions in seawater act as catalysts for this process. Mathematical modeling shows that global ocean can convert PET within years.

Accumulation of airborne microplastics in lichens from a landfill dumping site (Italy)

Stefano Loppi et al.

Summary: This study found that lichens surrounding a landfill in Italy accumulated higher amounts of microplastics, indicating spatially limited impact of landfill emissions. Monitoring microplastic deposition through lichens is an effective method.

Evidence of free tropospheric and long-range transport of microplastic at Pic du Midi Observatory

S. Allen et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of atmospheric microplastic pollution at the Pic du Midi Observatory, indicating free long range transport in the troposphere. The results show evidence of true free tropospheric transport of microplastic particles <50 μm over 4 summer months at an altitude of 2877 meters. Analysis of air/particle history modelling suggests potential global aerosol microplastic transport through intercontinental and trans-oceanic pathways.

Microplastic Spectral Classification Needs an Open Source Community: Open Specy to the Rescue!

Win Cowger et al.

Summary: Open Specy is a free software solution for spectral classification, offering users the ability to view, process, identify, and share microplastic spectra. It stands out as the only open source software with a community library, and provides a range of tools for spectrum processing to build a diverse reference library for microplastics.

Microplastic in atmospheric fallouts of a developing Southeast Asian megacity under tropical climate

Tran-Nguyen-Sang Truong et al.

Summary: A study on microplastics in atmospheric fallouts from a developing megacity under the influence of a tropical monsoon climate found that deposition fluxes varied between sites, with fibers being the predominant component and fragments observed occasionally. Contrary to expectations, deposition fluxes did not vary temporally with rainfall and wind, suggesting no effect of the tropical climate.

Atmospheric transport and deposition of microplastics in a subtropical urban environment

Yumei Huang et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution is a major environmental challenge, and the atmosphere plays a significant role in the global cycle of microplastics. This study analyzed atmospheric deposition of microplastics in urban Guangzhou, China, finding that fibers were the most abundant type and likely originated from textiles. Meteorological factors like rainfall and wind events were suggested to influence the transport and deposition of airborne microplastics.

Dry and wet deposition of microplastics in a semi-arid region (Shiraz, Iran)

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found in settled dusts and rainfall collected in Shiraz and Mount Derak, Iran, with a majority of fibrous nature and polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate being the most abundant polymers. The study showed higher deposition of microplastics during dry months and suggested distal sources of microplastics carried by air masses from the north and west. Additionally, the research adds to the evidence of the global ubiquity and long-range transport of microplastics in the atmosphere.
