Chlorine dioxide oxidation of hemicellulose from alkaline hydrolysate bagasse to remove lignin unit in lignin-carbohydrate complex

Jinzhi Han et al.

Summary: Chlorine dioxide can effectively remove lignin from hemicellulose without altering the structure and sugar composition of carbohydrates. After treatment, the removal rate of lignin reached 68%, with noticeable degradation of G lignin and S lignin. This method can yield hemicellulose with high molecular weight and purity.

Anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge for volatile fatty acid production: Recent updates of pretreatment methods and the potential effect of humic and nutrients substances

Ting Liang et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the recent advancements in volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge. Factors affecting VFAs production including sludge properties, metabolic pathways, and pretreatment methods were evaluated. It was found that additives and pretreatment are energetically preferred for accelerating VFAs accumulation, while different structures of humic substances may have varying effects on the fermentation process and VFAs production.

Performance evaluation of wastewater treatment plants under the sewage variations imposed by COVID-19 spread prevention actions

Hamed Yazdian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of wastewater treatment plants in Isfahan province, Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic and found that although the inflow of WWTPs increased and the concentrations of COD and BOD in municipal wastewater decreased, the performance of WWTPs remained rather stable. Different types of secondary treatment units showed stable performances, and disinfection was enhanced in WWTPs to reduce the likelihood of viral transmission via wastewater. The characteristics of municipal wastewater can be used as an indicator for coordinating prevention actions in similar epidemics, which can be beneficial for the management of WWTPs and risk control in urban areas.
