Carbon emission from thermokarst lakes inNEEuropean tundra

Svetlana A. Zabelina et al.

Summary: This study reveals that greenhouse gas emissions from inland waters in subarctic regions of NE Europe, particularly in peatlands with permafrost, are still poorly quantified and studied. Large lakes dominate GHG emissions, while small thaw ponds contribute minimally to overall emissions.

Simulation of the Present and Future Projection of Permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with Statistical and Machine Learning Models

Jie Ni et al.

Summary: The study uses statistical and machine learning modeling approaches to accurately simulate the changes in temperature and active layer thickness of permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results indicate that the current permafrost area on the plateau is substantial, but it is projected to significantly decrease under various climate change scenarios in the future.

High methane emissions from thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau are largely attributed to ebullition fluxes

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: CH4 emissions from thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau show significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity, with ebullition being the main CH4 pathway and lake type and organic matter content influencing CH4 diffusion fluxes. Our findings highlight the importance of considering ebullition CH4 fluxes to improve the accuracy of estimations for CH4 emissions from thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau.

Sentinel-Based Inventory of Thermokarst Lakes and Ponds Across Permafrost Landscapes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Zhiqiang Wei et al.

Summary: Thaw lakes are important in permafrost regions for regulating hydrology, ecology, and biogeochemistry. This study successfully extracted thaw lake boundaries in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using the random forest model and manual visual vectorization methods, providing accurate information on the total area and distribution of thaw lakes. The inventory of thaw lakes is expected to contribute to Earth system models for a more comprehensive projection of their biogeochemical feedback under continued global warming.

Permafrost carbon feedbacks threaten global climate goals

Susan M. Natali et al.

Summary: The rapid warming in the Arctic has exacerbated wildfires and thawing permafrost, leading to carbon emissions that are not fully accounted for, impacting global greenhouse gas emission budgets. There is an urgent need for international cooperation to incorporate the latest scientific knowledge on carbon emissions from permafrost thaw and wildfires, and to more aggressively reduce societal emissions to address the global climate crisis.

Opposing Effects of Climate and Permafrost Thaw on CH4 and CO2 Emissions From Northern Lakes

Summary: The study found that with climate warming, peatland lakes in northern regions shifted from CO2 emissions to absorption, driven by increased hydrological connectivity and nutrient availability, while methane emissions increased 8-fold in warmer regions, correlated with water temperature and shifts in microbial communities.

Summary: SoilGrids generates global maps of soil properties using advanced technology and machine learning methods, incorporating soil observations and environmental factors to predict and analyze various soil properties worldwide. The research shows a good predictive performance for global soil properties, but also reveals the need for more soil observation data, especially in high-latitude regions.
