Water column stability driving the succession of phytoplankton functional groups in karst hydroelectric reservoirs

Gaoyang Cui et al.

Summary: The study reveals that hydrological conditions are a critical factor controlling the composition and distribution of phytoplankton in hydroelectric reservoirs, and relative water column stability affects the succession of phytoplankton functional groups more than nutrient availability. The dominant functional groups in the study area are B, D, P, and J, while Lo and X1 groups are exclusive to the reservoirs.

Microbial diversity accumulates in a downstream direction in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Shang Wang et al.

Summary: This study tracked spatial variation in microbial abundance and diversity in the Three Gorges Reservoir, revealing an increase in microbial diversity and a convergent distribution pattern in areas immediately upstream of the Three Gorges Dam. Immigration of various sources of microbial species overwhelms local environmental conditions in structuring microbial communities close to the dam. Tributary microbes have a greater influence on microbial diversity and environmental health in the reservoir compared to soils, especially for sites closer to the dam.

Global carbon budget of reservoirs is overturned by the quantification of drawdown areas

Philipp S. Keller et al.

Summary: Satellite observations show that globally, reservoirs are net emitters of carbon, with drawdown areas contributing to significant CO2 emissions. The exposure of drawdown areas challenges the idea that reservoirs are carbon sinks, as they emit more carbon than they bury. This overturns the conventional understanding of the role of reservoirs in the carbon cycle.

Regulation of particulate inorganic carbon by phytoplankton in hydropower reservoirs: Evidence from stable carbon isotope analysis

Yajun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration and carbon isotope composition of PIC and dissolved inorganic carbon in hydropower reservoirs on the Wujiang River in Southwest China. The research found that river PIC is derived from exogenous carbonate weathering and endogenous carbonate precipitation, while reservoir PIC is dominated by authigenic PIC driven by phytoplankton. The influence of phytoplankton on PIC production and transformation varies among reservoirs of different ages and trophic levels, with the seasonal stratification of PIC concentration and delta 13CPIC depending on surface photosynthesis and bottom respiration.

Interaction between carbon cycling and phytoplankton community succession in hydropower reservoirs: Evidence from stable carbon isotope analysis

Jing Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated phytoplankton community succession and carbon cycling in seven hydropower reservoirs on the Wujiang River in Southwest China. The research found that the succession of phytoplankton species influences carbon cycling in the reservoirs, with an increase in water temperature triggering community succession. Additionally, the availability of CO2 plays a key role in driving the direction of succession, ultimately enhancing carbon cycling when phytoplankton are dominated by Pyrrophyta or Cyanophyta.

Whole-ecosystem oxygenation experiments reveal substantially greater hypolimnetic methane concentrations in reservoirs during anoxia

Alexandria G. Hounshell et al.

Summary: Oxygen concentration is a key factor controlling greenhouse gas concentrations in the bottom waters of lakes and reservoirs, with anoxic conditions leading to higher methane levels. Additionally, the global warming potential of bottom water greenhouse gas concentrations may increase as hypolimnetic anoxia becomes more prevalent.
