Ecotoxicological risk assessment of wastewater irrigation on soil microorganisms: Fate and impact of wastewater-borne micropollutants in lettuce-soil system

Sara Gallego et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ecotoxicological risks of using wastewater for crop irrigation by assessing the fate of micropollutants in soil and their impact on plants and soil microorganisms. The results showed changes in soil bacterial community structure due to wastewater irrigation, but the bacterial evenness remained stable.

The influence of chemical composition, aerosol acidity, and metal dissolution on the oxidative potential of fine particulate matter and redox potential of the lung lining fluid

Pourya Shahpoury et al.

Summary: This study quantified the oxidative potential of PM2.5 from several Canadian cities and evaluated the application of empirical oxidative potential as a new metric for aerosol. The oxidative potential was strongly correlated with different emission source sectors, showing the highest levels from traffic emissions. Copper showed a high association with oxidative potential across all sites, while other metals' correlation depended on the emission sources. The solubility of iron was associated with sulfate and aerosol pH at most sites, with implications for the health effects of PM2.5.

Effect of the pharmaceuticals diclofenac and lamotrigine on stress responses and stress gene expression in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) at environmentally relevant concentrations

Yvonne Bigott et al.

Summary: The study found that lamotrigine had low translocation in fresh leaves, while diclofenac or its metabolite 4'-hydroxydiclofenac did not show this pattern. Stress-related genes were only expressed in the roots of diclofenac-treated plants. An oxidative burst was observed in roots and leaves at the same time point as the detection of lamotrigine in leaves, potentially leading to altered gene expression in both tissues. The results suggest that pharmaceuticals like lamotrigine and diclofenac may act as signaling molecules, affecting the circadian expression of stress-related genes in lettuce and potentially causing a repressed physiological status of the plant.
