Preferential transport of microplastics by wind

Joanna E. Bullard et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that wind transport is more effective in mobilizing microplastic particles compared to sand and soil. In wind erosion experiments, microplastic fibers were found to have lower enrichment compared to microbeads, with soil showing higher enrichment levels of microplastic fibers compared to sand, suggesting the need to carefully parameterize microplastic shape in models of atmospheric microplastic transport.

Microplastics accumulate to thin layers in the stratified Baltic Sea

Emilia Uurasjarvi et al.

Summary: In the Baltic Sea, water stratification creates thin layers where microplastics, mainly consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate, accumulate. Sampling from deep water layers in addition to surface waters is necessary to obtain a comprehensive overview of the abundance of microplastics in stratified water bodies. The density of microplastics did not show a trend with sampling depth, likely due to the effects of biofilm formation on sinking rates.

Microplastics in the Koshi River, a remote alpine river crossing the Himalayas from China to Nepal

Ling Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted an investigation on the distributions and sources of microplastics (MPs) in the surface waters and sediments of five tributaries of the Koshi River in the Himalayas. It found that atmospheric transmission and deposition, as well as untreated sewage effluents and solid wastes, were the main sources of MPs. The study also revealed that fibers made up the majority of MP particles, with urbanization, agriculture, and tourism contributing to pollution in the river.

Spatio-temporal variation of microplastic along a rural to urban transition in a tropical river*

Hui Ling Chen et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a global issue, with limited data available in tropical countries like Malaysia. Langat River in Malaysia showed that all water samples contained microplastics, mainly fibres, with concentrations directly related to river discharge. Continuous logging of turbidity sensors could improve estimates of microplastic loads in rivers.

Silvia Galafassi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of microplastic particles in the digestive system of perch in four south-alpine lakes and found that 86% of the analyzed specimens contained MPs. Despite the high number of ingested MPs, fish health was not affected, but the fullness index showed a potential interference with feeding activity.

Vertical migration of microplastics in porous media: Multiple controlling factors under wet-dry cycling

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the vertical transport of Microplastics (MPs) in porous sand media, finding a strong positive correlation between surface hydrophobicity and MP mobility. Factors such as MP particle size, sand diameter, wet-dry cycles, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were found to influence the migration behavior of MPs in sand. Frequent wet-dry cycles and the presence of DOM were observed to promote the vertical migration of MPs in the sand.

Microplastics contamination in pearl-farming lagoons of French Polynesia

Tony Gardon et al.

Summary: Pearl-farming in French Polynesia is a significant source of income, but plastic pollution poses a threat to marine life and the economy. Research shows widespread contamination of microplastics in surface water, water column, and cultivated pearl oysters, with high levels in the water column. Small, fragment-shaped microplastics are prevalent, likely resulting from the breakdown of larger plastic debris.

Summary: This study established a model to investigate the dispersion and transport processes of common microplastics in river sediments, finding that lower density microplastics are more mobile and different types of plastics exhibit varying levels of mobility in sediment. The study results suggest that river sediments may act as pollution sinks for microplastics.

Microplastic and other anthropogenic microparticles in water and sediments of Lake Simcoe

Miguel Eduardo L. Felismino et al.

Summary: This study identified microplastics and other anthropogenic microparticles in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, with lower abundances compared to other large freshwater lakes. Fibers were the most common morphology, while fragments were predominant in manta trawl samples. The distribution of microplastics appeared to be influenced by proximity to urban centers and prevailing winds in surface water manta trawls.

First evidence of microplastic contamination in the freshwater of Lake Guaiba, Porto Alegre, Brazil

Crislaine Bertoldi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination of microplastics in Lake Guaiba in southern Brazil and found widespread pollution of the lake with plastic particles. Fragment type was the most common morphology of microplastics, with white/transparent and red being the predominant colors. Additionally, the research indicated that the distribution of microplastics is strongly influenced by the geohydrological characteristics of the lake, emphasizing the need for improved waste management regulations to reduce microplastic pollution in freshwater systems.

Summary: This paper summarizes the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in freshwater sediments, highlighting their ubiquitous presence and varying abundance in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The dominant shape of microplastics in freshwater sediment is fibers with a diameter less than 1 mm, with white/transparent and PE/PS as the most frequently recorded colors and types. The consistency in morphological characteristics and components of microplastics between marine and freshwater sediments may indicate their interlinkages and source-pathways.

Summary: The research highlights the need for comprehensive approaches to understand the accumulation patterns and entry pathways of microplastics in urbanized estuarine environments. The study found higher concentrations of 500-2000 μm microplastic particles at the mouth of the Raritan River, while 250-500 μm microplastic particles were more prevalent in the bay and coastal ocean samples. Comparison of polymer concentrations and types from different sources provided insight into potential pathways of microplastics entry into the system.
