Outdoor Atmospheric Microplastics within the Humber Region (United Kingdom): Quantification and Chemical Characterisation of Deposited Particles Present

Lauren C. Jenner et al.

Summary: Atmospheric microplastics (MPs) have been consistently found in air samples globally, with higher levels in areas with high human activity. A study in the Humber region of the UK showed that MP levels increased with decreasing particle size, mainly consisting of film-shaped MPs made of polyethylene and nylon. In urbanized areas relevant to human exposure, MPs levels also increased with decreasing particle size, with petroleum resin being the predominant polymer type.

Contributions of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in microplastic pollution research: A review

S. Veerasingam et al.

Summary: This review highlights the extensive use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in microplastic (MP) pollution research since 2004. Over 400 research papers on FTIR techniques in MP pollution research from 2010 to 2019 were identified, focusing on MP characterization, fate, and transport in various environmental matrices. The review provides insights into the current application of FTIR spectroscopy in MP research and future challenges for understanding the risk of MPs.

Semi-automated analysis of microplastics in complex wastewater samples

Alice A. Horton et al.

Summary: Analysis of samples from wastewater treatment works in the UK showed high removal rates of various types of microplastics during the treatment process, with sludge samples revealing higher concentrations than previously reported. The most common polymers identified were polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate.

Pathways of human exposure to microplastics, and estimation of the total burden

Josefa Domenech et al.

Summary: The continuous growth of plastic production results in contamination of environmental niches by plastic waste. Degradation of large plastics leads to the production of microplastics and nanoplastics that spread through various pathways, causing chronic human exposure. Despite ingestion being the most studied exposure route, other contact pathways should not be underestimated. Gaps in the investigation of human exposure to environmental microplastics and a lack of standardized protocols for detection and quantification have been identified.

Household indoor microplastics within the Humber region (United Kingdom): Quantification and chemical characterisation of particles present

Lauren C. Jenner et al.

Summary: This study found higher concentrations of suspended microplastics (MPs) indoors compared to outdoor environments, with smaller, fibrous particles being the most abundant indoors. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was the most common type of MPs observed, accounting for 62% of the total.

Presence of airborne microplastics in human lung tissue

Luis Fernando Amato-Lourenco et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the presence of microplastics in human lung tissues, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most frequently detected polymers. The potential adverse effects of these microplastics on the respiratory system following inhalation are still unknown, but further research is needed to understand the heterogeneous characteristics of these contaminants.
