Contaminant concentrations and risks associated with the Pacific oyster in the highly urbanized San Diego Bay

Theresa Sinicrope Talley et al.

Summary: Filter-feeding shellfish, such as Pacific oysters, can serve as useful indicators of coastal water health and consumption risks. The study found that contaminant levels in Pacific oysters varied between summer and winter, with higher levels of certain pollutants in different seasons. Although overall contaminant levels in Pacific oysters were lower than in California mussels, there were individual samples that exceeded contamination thresholds.

Concentrations and human exposure assessment of per and polyfluoroalkyl substances in farmed marine shellfish in South Africa

Ovokeroye A. Abafe et al.

Summary: This study measured the concentrations of 15 PFAS in farmed marine shellfish and determined the human daily intake and hazard quotient of PFAS through shellfish consumption, finding that these compounds do not pose a health risk to the South African population. The prevalence of PFCAs in farmed shellfish reflects the current contamination profile of PFAS in the environment, providing background data for future studies on emerging contaminants in the African coastal environment.

Identification of an Analytical Method Interference for Perfluorobutanoic Acid in Biological Samples

Jacqueline T. Bangma et al.

Summary: The investigation of PFAS in environmental and biological samples utilizes both high- and low-resolution mass spectrometry techniques. Low-resolution MS is more commonly used and affordable for studying identified PFAS, while high-resolution MS can identify and quantify novel compounds. Recent research on PFAS in human placenta from high-risk pregnancies revealed that PFBA concentrations were influenced by a chemical interferent, leading to the use of additional instrumentation for investigation.

Distribution and Exposure Risk Assessment of Perfluorinated Alkyl Substances in Aquatic Products along the Coastal Region of the South China Sea

Xu-Feng Wang et al.

Summary: The research aimed to monitor the contamination of 23 Perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in seafood from South China Coastal Regions. Results showed a rising trend in average concentrations of PFASs and the detection of a new pollution component, PFHxS, indicating worsening contamination in the area. Similar levels of PFAS concentrations were found in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan provinces, with Guangxi having the highest concentration of PFNA.

Summary: This study evaluated exposure to phthalate metabolites in free-ranging bottlenose dolphins, finding that approximately 75% of the dolphins had detectable concentrations of at least one phthalate metabolite. Sex and age did not significantly affect the detection and concentration of phthalate metabolites.
