Physical versus virtual water transfers to overcome local water shortages: A comparative analysis of impacts

Fatemeh Karandish et al.

Summary: Water shortages around the world pose significant threats to local water security and food production. Water managers have been implementing various measures to address these challenges. A comparative analysis in Iran found that physical inter-basin water transfers can reduce water scarcity in certain provinces, but at the cost of decreased economic benefits for certain crops, while virtual inter-basin water transfers can achieve the same reduction in water scarcity without significant negative impacts on economic benefits.

Quantitative analysis of nonlinear climate change impact on drought based on the standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index

Ruxin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that drought in the Songnen Plain of Northeast China was marginally alleviated during 1961-2016, especially in spring, winter, the growing season, and on the annual timescale. Significant trends were observed in temperature, sunshine duration, and wind speed, with temperature exacerbating drought tendency and net radiation and wind speed offsetting the drought tendency caused by rising temperature. The positive contribution of wind speed was larger than the negative contribution of temperature, particularly in areas around 46 degrees N.

Institutional challenges and stakeholder perception towards planned water reuse in peri-urban agriculture of the Bengal delta

Kamonashish Haldar et al.

Summary: The unplanned use of urban wastewater by peri-urban farmers in developing countries poses risks to the environment and farmers, while planned water reuse can reduce these risks. However, the implementation of planned water reuse requires consideration of stakeholder perceptions and existing organizational structures. The study found that the majority of stakeholders support planned water reuse for peri-urban agriculture.
