Dynamic pyrolysis behaviors, products, and mechanisms of waste rubber and polyurethane bicycle tires

Xiaojie Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis behavior, gaseous products, and reaction mechanisms of waste bicycle tires (RT) and polyurethane tires (PUT) using thermogravimetry (TG), TG-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), and pyrolysis-gas chromato-graphy/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The results showed that the decomposition of PUT was easier compared to RT, as confirmed by kinetic, thermodynamic, and comprehensive pyrolysis index data. The pyrolysis mechanism models for RT were described by two-dimensional diffusion and two second-order models, while PUT was best described by three consecutive reaction-order models.

An overview on the recycling of waste ground tyre rubbers in thermoplastic matrices: Effect of added fillers

Friday Nwankwo Archibong et al.

Summary: The increasing generation and accumulation of waste tyres threaten the ecosystem, making recycling of waste tyre rubber necessary. One potential recycling strategy is the blending of thermoplastics with ground tyre rubber (GTR), but achieving homogenous dispersion of GTR in matrix poses a challenge, requiring techniques such as surface treatments and additives.

Recycling of landfill wastes (tyres, plastics and glass) in construction - A review on global waste generation, performance, application and future opportunities

Wahid Ferdous et al.

Summary: The paper critically reviews the issues of tyre, plastic, and glass landfill waste globally. It emphasizes the inadequate recycling rates and the environmental problems caused by waste landfilling. The importance of finding new strategies for waste utilization is highlighted, along with a summary of global and country-specific production, recycling, and landfill rates.

Plastic recycling in a circular economy; determining environmental performance through an LCA matrix model approach

A. E. Schwarz et al.

Summary: Insights into environmental impacts of recycling and optimal recycling choices for specific plastic polymers are crucial for ensuring a circular economy for plastics. A life cycle assessment 'matrix' model was used to evaluate the environmental performance of 10 recycling technologies for the top 25 produced polymers in Europe, showing varying results depending on the polymer type. The model suggests that recycling the most demanded polymers in Europe could reduce CO2 emissions from plastics significantly.

Deposition characteristics of soot and tire-wear particles on urban tree leaves

Min-Cheol Cho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the deposition characteristics of particles of major tree species in urban areas of Korea through experiments, comparing the deposition velocity and rate among different species. The surface roughness and geometrical features of leaves and branches influenced the particle deposition velocity and rate. Planting tree species with high particle deposition rates can reduce the concentration of BC particles in roadside air produced by passing vehicles.

Effects of ionic liquid on cellulosic nanofiller filled natural rubber bionanocomposites

Sohail Yasin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ionic liquid can improve the dispersion of cellulosic nanofillers and enhance the mechanical strength of vulcanizates. As the concentration of cellulosic nanofillers and ionic liquid increases, the viscoelastic rheological behavior of the vulcanizates is also affected.

Payne effect of carbon black filled natural rubber nanocomposites: Influences of extraction, crosslinking, and swelling

Yihu Song et al.

Summary: Rubber nanocomposites undergoing dynamic shearing at large strain amplitudes exhibit the nonlinear Payne effect, which is characterized by decays of storage and loss moduli or by an overshoot of loss modulus near a critical strain amplitude. The study found that the filler in the nanocomposites amplifies the microscopic strain amplitude of the rubber phase, reducing the onset strain amplitude of the Payne effect. Partial removal of bound rubber by compounding paraffin swollen compounds can lower modulus and eliminate the overshoot of loss modulus.

Car and truck tire wear particles in complex environmental samples - A quantitative comparison with traditional microplastic polymer mass loads

Isabel Gossmann et al.

Summary: Tire wear particles are identified as a major source of environmental microplastics, posing a threat to the ecosystem. Results show that car tire wear dominates over truck tire wear in terms of mass loads, with significantly higher concentrations of tire wear particles compared to traditional microplastics.
