Exact mobility edges and topological phase transition in two-dimensional non-Hermitian quasicrystals

Zhi-Hao Xu et al.

Summary: A two-dimensional quasicrystal model with exact mobility edges is discovered, displaying time-reversal symmetry. In the thermodynamic limit, it is found that the extended-localized transition point observed at the breaking point of time-reversal symmetry is topologically characterized by a hidden winding number in dual space.

Experimental Determination of PT-Symmetric Exceptional Points in a Single Trapped Ion

Liangyu Ding et al.

Summary: Observing exceptional points of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with parity-time-reversal symmetry can enhance metrology and sensing capabilities by increasing sensitivity to external perturbations. This exploration allows for detailed quantum phase transitions and extraction of eigenvalues, leading to the measurement of time-dependent perturbations through EP enhancement.

Exceptional topology of non-Hermitian systems

Emil J. Bergholtz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current understanding of the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems and its physical consequences in dissipative settings, focusing on the concept of exceptional degeneracies and its distinct phenomena, as well as the new notions of gapped phases in single-band systems. The unique sensitivity of non-Hermitian matrices to boundary conditions is highlighted, leading to anomalous relationships between bulk and boundary physics. Additionally, applications of non-Hermitian topology in classical and quantum systems are reviewed, showing its relevance beyond the field of topological phases.

Observation of Non-Hermitian Topology with Nonunitary Dynamics of Solid-State Spins

Wengang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study implements a non-Hermitian topological phase model and investigates it using a solid-state quantum simulator, demonstrating both integer and fractional winding numbers. The non-Hermitian topological phase with a fractional winding number is intrinsic to non-Hermitian systems and cannot be continuously deformed into any Hermitian topological phase.

Topological phase transitions driven by non-Hermiticity in quantum spin Hall insulators

Junpeng Hou et al.

Summary: The study investigates topological phase transitions driven by non-Hermiticity, showing that transitions from trivial to quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators can be induced by varying non-Hermitian terms, and exceptional edge arcs exist in QSH phases. Two topological invariants are established for characterizing the non-Hermitian phase transitions, providing a powerful tool for exploring novel non-Hermitian topological matter and their device applications beyond Chern classes.

Localization and topological transitions in non-Hermitian quasiperiodic lattices

Ling-Zhi Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, localization and topological transitions in a one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasiperiodic lattice were investigated. The impact of nonreciprocal hopping, complex potential phase, and other non-Hermitian factors on the localization region in phase diagrams was revealed. It was found that the localization transition was accompanied by topological phase transitions characterized by winding numbers of eigenenergies, and a real-complex eigenenergy transition coincided with or occurred before these phase transitions in the nonreciprocal case. Additionally, the many-body localization transition was shown to coincide with the real-complex transition and precede the topological transition in the nonreciprocal case, with differences observed in the complex phase case.

Exact mobility edges, PT-symmetry breaking, and skin effect in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasicrystals

Yanxia Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a general analytic method is proposed to study the localization transition in one-dimensional quasicrystals with parity-time (PT) symmetry, resulting in exact mobility edges and a proof of the correspondence between extended (localized) states and PT-symmetry (PT-symmetry-broken) states. The models are further generalized to cases with nonreciprocal hopping, leading to a general and analytical expression of mobility edges, where extended states transition into skin states when boundary conditions change. This suggests that skin states and localized states can coexist with their boundary determined by the mobility edges.
