Warm deep-sea temperatures across Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 from clumped isotope thermometry

Tobias Agterhuis et al.

Summary: This study uses the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer to independently reconstruct the deep-sea temperatures of the South Atlantic during the early Eocene. The results show that the deep-sea temperatures during this period were three degrees higher than previously estimated. This finding is significant for reassessing the isotopic composition of Eocene seawater and the impact of deep-ocean pH changes on benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope records.

A Unified Clumped Isotope Thermometer Calibration (0.5-1,100°C) Using Carbonate-Based Standardization

N. T. Anderson et al.

Summary: The study analyzed a diverse sample suite in order to address discrepancies between calibration schemes for carbonate clumped isotope thermometry. The results showed no statistically significant offset between sample types, leading to the proposal of a composite carbonate-standardized regression equation. The agreement across a wide range of temperatures and sample types demonstrates a unified and broadly applicable clumped isotope thermometer calibration.

Coupled Mg/Ca and Clumped Isotope Measurements Indicate Lack of Substantial Mixed Layer Cooling in the Western Pacific Warm Pool During the Last ∼5 Million Years

N. Meinicke et al.

Summary: The Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) plays a crucial role in influencing climate dynamics. Controversy exists regarding the evolution of surface temperatures in the IPWP since the Pliocene, fueled by contradictory proxy evidence. Temperature reconstructions using different proxies show good agreement when applying minor corrections for seawater chemistry changes.

Southern Ocean bottom-water cooling and ice sheet expansion during the middle Miocene climate transition

Thomas J. Leutert et al.

Summary: The study reveals that during the middle Miocene climatic optimum, the bottom-water temperatures in the Southern Ocean were higher than today, but overall showed a cooling trend. Prior to the climatic transition, there were several cooling events in the bottom waters, followed by a main increase in global ice volume and a transient warming of the bottom waters. The regional freshening of the upper water column at that time might have contributed to the decoupling observed between global ice volume and bottom-water temperatures.

DeepMIP: model intercomparison of early Eocene climatic optimum (EECO) large-scale climate features and comparison with proxy data

Daniel J. Lunt et al.

Summary: The results from simulations of the early Eocene climate optimum show that non-CO2 boundary conditions contribute significantly to the Eocene warmth. The ensemble of models generally shows reduced spread of global mean surface temperature response and increased climate sensitivity. Three models are consistent with proxies for global mean temperature, meridional SST gradient, and CO2. However, at a more regional scale, the models lack skill, particularly in the southwest Pacific region.
