Increasing the strain rate can shorten the response time of shale and modify its stress-strain curves. Additionally, the strength and elastic modulus of shale generally increase with increasing strain rate, and the failure mode changes from shearing failure to a combination of tensile split and shearing failure.
HighlightsIncrease in strain rate can shorten the mechanical response time of the shale and modify the stress-strain curves into linear form. The anisotropic strength and elastic modulus of the shale generally increased as the strain rate increases.Failure mode transform from shearing failure at low strain rate to combination of tensile split and shearing failure at high strain rate.
