A review of laboratory studies and theoretical analysis for the interaction mode between induced hydraulic fractures and pre-existing fractures

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reviewed induced hydraulic fracture behaviors and interaction processes in laboratory tests and theoretical analysis. It explored the effects of various parameters on fracture behaviors, interaction modes, and mechanisms, compared different theoretical criteria, conducted sensitivity analysis on geological conditions and hydraulic fracturing parameters, and discussed important findings for optimizing fracture-stimulation operations in the field. Promising studies were recommended for further insights into the study of interaction modes based on the literature review.

Laboratory hydraulic fracturing experiments on crystalline rock for geothermal purposes

Li Zhuang et al.

Summary: This article reviews laboratory experimental studies on hydraulic fracturing under triaxial and true triaxial stress conditions in crystalline rock for geothermal purposes, focusing on the stimulation of Enhanced Geothermal Systems. It discusses key factors influencing hydraulic fracture initiation and propagation, innovative injection schemes, and fracture-inspection techniques for quantifying the efficiency of injection protocols. The discussion section includes diagrams connecting injection rate with resulting fluid infiltration zone and fracture process zone, providing insights into potential field applications in geothermal fields.

Cyclic Water Injection Potentially Mitigates Seismic Risks by Promoting Slow and Stable Slip of a Natural Fracture in Granite

Yinlin Ji et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activation of a critically stressed natural fracture in granite under pressure-controlled and volume-controlled monotonic and cyclic water injection. Results show that cyclic injection can lead to aseismic fracture slip at smaller peak slip rates compared to monotonic injection, but continued injection after an unstable shut-in stage could result in rapid and unstable fracture slip.

Modelling Rock Fracture Induced By Hydraulic Pulses

Xun Xi et al.

Summary: Soft cyclic hydraulic fracturing is an effective technology for subsurface energy extraction, inducing rock fatigue to reduce breakdown pressure and seismic risk. A numerical method is developed to model rock fracture induced by hydraulic pulses with consideration of rock fatigue. Experimental results validate the developed numerical model, showing that hydraulic pulses can reduce rock breakdown pressure by 10-18% upon 10-4000 cycles.

Fluid-driven micro-cracking behaviour of crystalline rock using a coupled hydro-grain-based discrete element method

Lie Kong et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a coupled hydro-grain-based discrete element model to explore fluid-driven micro-cracking of crystalline rock. Laboratory-scale fracturing cases over granite are simulated, revealing unique behaviors such as non-symmetrical propagation, zipper mode initiation, and generations of cracks. The cracking mode is dominated by tension failure, with variations in crack orientation and aperture influenced by in-situ stresses.

The Role of Rock Matrix Permeability in Controlling Hydraulic Fracturing in Sandstones

Marco Fazio et al.

Summary: A concomitant effect of hydraulic fracturing experiments is fluid permeation into the rock matrix, which can slow down or impede the fracturing process. Low permeability or the use of an inner silicon rubber sleeve can promote hydraulic fracturing and reduce seismic activity.
