Alternative Conservation Paradigms and Ecological Knowledge of Small-Scale Artisanal Fishers in a Changing Marine Scenario in Argentina

Daniela M. Truchet et al.

Summary: This study examines conservation paradigms of small-scale artisanal fishers and other actors involved in the conservation of the Bahia Blanca Estuary. By studying the relationship between fishers and non-human entities and exploring the ecological knowledge of fisher communities, the study identifies communalism as the dominant paradigm within the fisher communities. The findings highlight the importance of understanding local perspectives and practices for the conservation of coastal ecosystems.

Implications of poverty traps across levels

Sonja Radosavljevic et al.

Summary: Recent research shows poverty is multidimensional with traps across multilevel social-ecological systems that can reinforce each other, posing challenges for poverty alleviation. Neglecting key interactions may lead to incorrect assessments and inadequate alleviation strategies. Cross-level interactions can offer possibilities for escaping poverty, while the effectiveness of development interventions depends on a combination of factors including biophysical and economic dynamics, farmers' behavior, and community spending.

Exploring gender inclusion in small-scale fisheries management and development in Melanesia

Sangeeta Mangubhai et al.

Summary: The study reveals that while gender inclusive approaches are being used in the Pacific fisheries sector, there are challenges in implementation, such as most approaches only 'reaching' women without truly 'benefitting', 'empowering', or 'transforming' women's lives. Fisheries organizations need to strengthen their gender commitment and efforts in implementing effective gender approaches.
