Regimes of wettability-dependent and wettability-independent bouncing of a drop on a solid surface

Praveen K. Sharma et al.

Summary: Tiny drops of millimetre size can bounce on both superhydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces when supported by a thin cushion of gas. The dynamics of drop motion is governed by three important dimensionless parameters, and a phase diagram is generated to separate different bouncing regions. The simulations can successfully reproduce experimentally observed gas films and scaling laws, as well as capture gas bubbles inside bouncing drops at higher Weber and Reynolds numbers.
