Diagnostic Accuracy Study of a Novel Blood-Based Assay for Identification of Tuberculosis in People Living with HIV

Erik Sodersten et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of an early-prototype cartridge assay for HIV patients and showed its potential value for triage and diagnosis in tuberculosis patients. The prototype showed promising results in discriminating TB from other illnesses and in comparison with other microbiological tests like Xpert MTB/RIF.

Transcriptomic signatures for diagnosing tuberculosis in clinical practice: a prospective, multicentre cohort study

Long T. Hoang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of blood transcriptomic signatures in patients with suspected tuberculosis, but found that they lacked sufficient accuracy for diagnosis in routine clinical practice. Transcriptional signatures were not clinically useful for diagnosing suspected tuberculosis, even in patients with highly probable tuberculosis where there is a great unmet need.

Cough-independent production of viable Mycobacterium tuberculosis in bioaerosol

Benjamin Patterson et al.

Summary: The study revealed that peripheral lung bioaerosols exhaled through deep exhalations alone contain viable Mtb, suggesting non-cough transmission is possible in PTB patients.

Multicomponent Strategy with Decentralized Molecular Testing for Tuberculosis

A. Cattamanchi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that a multicomponent diagnostic strategy, including on-site molecular testing and implementation support, significantly increased the number of patients tested, diagnosed, and treated for confirmed tuberculosis.

Characterization of oral swab samples for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis

Rachel C. Wood et al.

Summary: Oral swab analysis (OSA) can detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) DNA in TB patients, with FLOQSwabs collecting more biomass and showing higher sensitivity. There was no reduction in bacterial biomass during repeated tongue samplings, indicating a potential for further development of this TB screening method.

A prospective multicentre diagnostic accuracy study for the Truenat tuberculosis assays

Adam Penn-Nicholson et al.

Summary: The study found that Molbio's Truenat assays performed comparably to Xpert in diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis, and testing at primary healthcare centers with limited infrastructure was feasible. These findings supported the development of World Heath Organization policy recommendations for the Molbio assays.

Evaluation of the diagnostic performance of laboratory-based c-reactive protein as a triage test for active pulmonary tuberculosis

Thomas H. A. Samuels et al.

Summary: The study found that the CRP triage test has high sensitivity but low specificity for PTB, making it suitable for HIV+ patients. An algorithm combining CRP triage with Xpert MTB/Rif confirmatory testing can reduce the usage of Xpert while maintaining a high sensitivity. Further research is needed to evaluate the potential of CRP in prospective studies using point-of-care platforms.

Hellen Hiza et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a simplified T cell activation marker (TAM)-TB assay for real-time detection of tuberculosis in adults, showing high accuracy and unaffected by HIV status.
