Antibodies to Bluetongue, Akabane and Schmallenberg viruses in native dromedary camels in Turkey

Zuleyha Pestil et al.

Summary: Specific antibodies to Bluetongue virus, Akabane virus, and Schmallenberg virus were detected in a relatively high rate in camels in Turkey, with the most common multiple infection being dual infection of AKAV and BTV. These findings highlight the need for an active surveillance program to manage and trace the dynamics of these infections in the Turkish camel population.

Akabane virus infection in Eastern Mediterranean Region in Turkey: Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as a possible vector

Seval Bilge Dagalp et al.

Summary: The prevalence of AKAV infection in cattle, sheep, and goats in Turkey's Eastern Mediterranean region was 44.74%, 22.90%, and 14.52%, respectively, with an overall prevalence of 32.89%. AKAV-specific nucleic acid was detected in 1.13% of cattle and 1.74% of sheep. No goats tested positive for AKAV RNA. The study identified potential AKAV vectors in the region as the Culicoides schultzei complex, Culicoides longipennis, and Culicoides circumscriptus.
