Analytical models for heat transfer around a single ground heat exchanger in the presence of both horizontal and vertical groundwater flow considering a convective boundary condition

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: Ground heat exchanges (GHEs) are commonly used in ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems for exploring shallow geothermal energy. This study investigates the heat transfer around a single GHE in the presence of both horizontal and vertical groundwater flow under a convective boundary condition. The authors improve three typical GHE models by incorporating the effects of horizontal and vertical groundwater flow and considering convection between the air and the ground surface. Analytical solutions for the improved models are derived using the Green's function method and compared with numerical solutions, confirming their accuracy. The study finds that the temperature increment caused by a GHE is affected differently by horizontal and vertical groundwater flow, and the velocity of vertical groundwater flow can significantly change the temperature increment at downstream locations.

Analysis of gravel back-filled borehole heat exchanger in karst fractured limestone aquifer at local scale

Nicola Pastore et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the efficiency of borehole thermal energy system is closely related to aquifer transmissivity and groundwater Darcian velocity. Increasing aquifer transmissivity enhances heat transfer efficiency in gravel back-filled borehole. Under lower Darcian groundwater flow and lower aquifer transmissivity, heat transfer efficiency increases significantly compared to stagnant water.
