Experimental investigation on the effect of ice storage system on electricity consumption cost for a hypermarket

Dogan Erdemir et al.

Summary: The study examined the ice storage system integrated into the air conditioning system of a hypermarket in Ankara, Turkey, and found that it can reduce operating costs and pay back its initial investment within the first three years of operation. The ice storage system has been operating without any performance loss since 2016 and continues to reduce the energy cost of air conditioning by about half each year.

Heat transfer enhancement in latent heat thermal energy storage unit using a combination of fins and rotational mechanisms

Hossein Soltani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the combined effects of using fins and rotation in latent heat thermal energy storage systems, finding that rotational speed has a positive impact on solidification time and heat transfer rate. Additionally, increased rotational speed is directly related to an improvement in heat transfer ratio during the charging and discharging processes.

Mohit Barthwal et al.

Summary: Thermal energy storage systems for air-conditioning applications have been modeled and optimized, with analysis conducted on energy, exergy, environmental, and economic aspects in both full and partial operating modes. Optimization results showed that full operating mode led to higher exergy efficiency for both systems, while partial operating mode may be a more cost-effective operational strategy.

Performance prediction and optimization of a photovoltaic thermal system integrated with phase change material using response surface method

Arash Kazemian et al.

Summary: In this study, a predictive model based on the response surface method (RSM) was developed to show the relationship between operating factors and response factors of a photovoltaic thermal system. Single and multi-objective optimization were conducted to recommend optimal values of control factors for different conditions. The sensitivity analysis showed that solar radiation has a higher impact on energy and exergy outputs compared to other factors. According to the results, to maximize electrical power, thermal power, electrical exergy, thermal exergy, and minimize entropy generation, specific values of control factors were recommended.

Numerical study on the thermal enhancement of horizontal latent heat storage units with hierarchical fins

Yongping Huang et al.

Summary: This study introduces an innovative hierarchical fin to enhance the charging performance of horizontal LHS units, which significantly improves the charging rate and temperature uniformity according to numerical modeling. Compared to conventional fins, the hierarchical fin greatly enhances heat conduction performance in the late melting stage, leading to a maximum reduction of 41.1% in the whole melting time of horizontal LHS units.

Thermal performance analysis of multi-slab phase change thermal energy storage unit with heat transfer enhancement approaches

Dan Zhou et al.

Summary: A novel multi-slab thermal energy storage unit with NaNO3 as PCM was designed for concentrating solar thermal power plants, with two heat transfer enhancement methods of adding plate fins or 10 wt%EG compared and validated using a numerical model. The results show that adding fins can shorten phase change time by up to 18%, while adding 10 wt%EG is the most effective way to enhance heat transfer, with natural convection playing a critical role in heat transfer efficiency. Sensible heat during charging/discharging process occupies a significant portion of total heat stored/released, providing valuable insights for optimizing system design and operation.
