Comparison of advanced air liquefaction systems in Liquid Air Energy Storage applications

Aleksandra Dzido et al.

Summary: The dynamic growth of renewables in national power systems is driving the development of energy storage technologies. Liquid air energy storage is one such technology. Research shows that the choice of liquefaction system has no significant impact on the unit energy expenditures in the liquid air energy storage system, but the appropriate selection of liquefaction system type can minimize the unit energy expenditures for air condensation. The Kapitza system demonstrates high efficiency at different pressures, while the Linde-Hampson system has a significant decrease in efficiency. Heat exchangers contribute the most to the exergy destruction in the system.

Summary: Liquid air energy storage (LAES) is a high energy density electrical energy storage solution that can overcome geographical constraints, but with a low round-trip efficiency. Researchers have conducted in-depth studies, including thermodynamic and economic analysis, and future perspectives show that hybrid LAES solutions will be the most promising configuration to enhance system performance.

Energy Harvesting and Water Saving in Arid Regions via Solar PV Accommodation in Irrigation Canals

Ayman Alhejji et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a practical approach to reduce water evaporation in the Egyptian irrigation system by covering canals with solar photovoltaic panels, while also considering factors such as energy cost, net present value, and greenhouse gas emissions to develop a technoeconomically feasible grid-connected renewable integrated system. By utilizing an innovative metaheuristic algorithm and comparing results with genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization, the optimal sizing and configuration of the on-grid solar PV accommodation for irrigation systems can be determined to minimize impact on the levelized cost of energy.

Ecological impacts of run -of -river hydropower plants ? Current status and future prospects on the brink of energy transition

Alban Kuriqi et al.

Summary: The widespread perception of small run-of-river hydropower plants as renewable energy sources has led to their global proliferation, but such schemes may have negative impacts on fluvial ecosystems. Different types of small run-of-river hydropower schemes have varying ecological impacts, with diversion weir and pondage schemes being less eco-friendly compared to dam-toe schemes. Environmental flows are crucial for ecosystem conservation in rivers affected by hydropower operations.

Liquid air energy storage (LAES): A review on technology state-of-the-art, integration pathways and future perspectives

Andrea Vecchi et al.

Summary: Liquid air energy storage (LAES) has emerged as a feasible solution for energy system decarbonisation, providing high power output and storage capacity with advantages like high energy density and ease of deployment. Commercial LAES plants have been successfully built and demonstrated, sparking academic interest. However, heterogeneity in literature regarding concepts, methodologies, and scope complicates interpretation of outcomes, highlighting the need for more comprehensive integration studies and research on LAES capabilities beyond electricity output.
