The Ticino-Toce glacier system (Swiss-Italian Alps) in the framework of the Alpine Last Glacial Maximum

Sarah Kamleitner et al.

Summary: We present a new glacier chronology of the Ticino-Toce glacier in the Southern Alps, reconstructing the timing and extent of its Last Glacial Maximum advance with detailed landform relationships and surface exposure dating. The study reveals that the glacier remained relatively stable with only minor oscillations over a period of approximately 5000 years, and the Verbano piedmont lobe was larger than previously thought. Additionally, the research suggests synchronized glacier advances across the Western Alps, except for the southwestern massifs.

Post-LGM glacial and geomorphic evolution of the Dora Baltea valley (western Italian Alps)

Elena Serra et al.

Summary: Paleoglacial reconstructions in the European Alps have mainly focused on specific climatic periods, and few studies have investigated post-LGM glacier fluctuations. In this study, a detailed reconstruction of the post-LGM glacial history of the Dora Baltea catchment was presented. The study quantitatively reproduced the timing and ice-configuration of six LGM to early Holocene paleoglacial stages and revealed the role of catchment topography in controlling paleo equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) of large glacial systems.

Moraine crest or slope: An analysis of the effects of boulder position on cosmogenic exposure age

Matt D. Tomkins et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively assessed the relative utility of moraine crest and moraine slope sampling, finding that the spatial distribution of good boulders is effectively random, and landform stability has a greater influence on exposure age distributions than individual boulder characteristics. Postdepositional stability is strongly influenced by sedimentology, with differences between landforms potentially more significant than differences at the intra-landform scale.

Out-of-phase Late Pleistocene glacial maxima in the Western Alps reflect past changes in North Atlantic atmospheric circulation

Natacha Gribenski et al.

Summary: Paleoglacier reconstructions in the northern and southern forelands of the European Alps indicate a synchronous Late Pleistocene glacial maximum during Marine Isotope Stage 2, but strong controversy remains for the western foreland. New luminescence dating reveals two major glacier advances in the western Alpine foreland at ca. 75-60 and ca. 40-30 ka, coinciding with MIS 4 and late MIS 3, suggesting asynchrony in glacial maxima with the rest of the Alps due to atmospheric circulation reorganization over the North Atlantic in response to Northern Hemisphere ice-sheet fluctuations.

Geometry of glaciofluvial deposits and dynamics of the Lyonnais lobe ice front during the last glacial period (France, Northern Alps)

Thibault Roattino et al.

Summary: Research in the foreland of the French Western Alps has shown multiple stages of retreat or stagnation of the Lyonnais ice lobe during marine isotopic stages 4 and 2. Glaciofluvial corridors in the western part of the Lyonnais ice lobe were active during flash floods draining glacial meltwater at the Last Glacial Maximum, but are now dead valleys with terraces. Sedimentary analysis suggests these corridors correspond to tunnel valleys built during the most extensive Riss glaciation and were infilled with glacio-fluvial sediments during the Wurm maximum glacial extension.
