Polysubstance use and association with opioid use disorder treatment in the US Veterans Health Administration

Lewei A. Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that the majority of Veterans diagnosed with opioid use disorder in 2017 appeared to have at least one comorbid substance use disorder, and many also had multiple substance use disorders. Despite a higher likelihood of visiting a substance use disorder clinic, having a non-opioid substance use disorder was associated with a lower likelihood of receiving buprenorphine treatment, highlighting the importance of addressing polysubstance use in efforts to expand treatment for opioid use disorder.

Development and Feasibility Study of an Addiction-Focused Phenotyping Assessment Battery

Lori A. Keyser-Marcus et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of the NIDA PhAB in terms of ease of administration and time burden. Through research on 595 participants, it was found that the majority of eligible participants were able to complete all assessments, with an average time of 3 hours. Participants showed high satisfaction with the study, with over 90% willing to participate in similar studies and recommend the study to others.

Opioid Use and Driving Performance

Keaton T. Cameron-Burr et al.

Summary: This review assesses the current literature regarding opioids in relation to neurocognitive function, driving performance, and accident risk. Illicit use, initiation of therapy, and opioid use in combination with other psychoactive medications are contexts most clearly associated with impairment of driving-related functions and/or operation of a motor vehicle. Clinicians should counsel patients on the risk of impairment when initiating therapy, co-prescribing opioids and other psychoactive drugs, or when a patient is suspected of having an opioid use disorder.
