Seroprevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in HIV infected pregnant women from Brazil

Isabelle Geoffroy Ribeiro Freitag et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated an association between HIV infection and positive serologic response to L. monocytogenes, as well as a correlation between white cheese consumption and seroreactivity. Among pregnant women living with HIV, lower CD4+ cell count at study entry and neonates admitted to the intensive care unit were factors associated with positive serology for L. monocytogenes.

Genetic relationships and biofilm formation of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from the smoked salmon industry

Francesca Maggio et al.

Summary: The study found that L. monocytogenes had a significantly higher biofilm formation ability at 37 degrees Celsius compared to 30 and 12 degrees Celsius, indicating a temperature-dependent behavior. Additionally, the biofilm-forming ability exhibited a strain-specific trend not correlated with Clonal Complex (CC) or strain persistence, but instead correlated with the presence of specific genes like inl, SSI, and ermC.

Genomic diversity and characterization of Listeria monocytogenes from dry-cured ham processing plants

Aida Perez-Baltar et al.

Summary: Genomic diversity of Listeria monocytogenes isolates from deboning and slicing areas in three dry-cured ham processing plants was analyzed. Different serogroups, pulsotypes, and sequence types were identified, along with premature stop codons associated with attenuated virulence and features related to biofilm formation and increased tolerance to compounds. The study suggests the need for control measures and cleaning protocols to eliminate the pathogen effectively in the processing environment.

Unraveling the emergence and population diversity of Listeria monocytogenes in a newly built meat facility through whole genome sequencing

Adrian Alvarez-Molina et al.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and analysis of the food processing environment of a newly opened meat processing facility, identifying an increase in Listeria monocytogenes isolation frequency and sequence type diversity over time. Persistent strains were observed in the environment, suggesting clonal expansion and persistence of certain strains with attenuated virulence potential and plasmid presence. The analysis also showed that ST9 strains isolated were more closely related to European isolates than North American isolates and more frequently linked to meat and pork products in Europe.

Clinical and molecular epidemiology of human listeriosis in Taiwan

Yu-Tsung Huang et al.

Summary: The study in Taiwan found that non-perinatal listeriosis cases were more common in males with an average age of 63.9 years, most of whom had underlying conditions. The 30-day all-cause mortality rate was 25.2%, which was associated with age, steroid usage, and respiratory distress.

Real-time PCR identification of Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4c using primers for novel target genes obtained by comparative genomic analysis

Fan Li et al.

Summary: The study identified novel target genes using comparative genomics for the specific detection of Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4c, an important serotype in aquatic products. A real-time PCR assay based on these target genes showed robust specificity and sensitivity for detecting serotype 4c, even in the presence of other L. monocytogenes serotypes and non-L. monocytogenes strains. The assay successfully detected serotype 4c in artificially contaminated grass carp without enrichment, demonstrating its potential for accurate and sensitive detection in food products.

Proteomic Analysis of Listeria monocytogenes FBUNT During Biofilm Formation at 10°C in Response to Lactocin AL705

Constanza Melian et al.

Summary: The study showed that treating Listeria monocytogenes with sublethal dose of lactocin AL705 can reduce biofilm formation and induce adaptation mechanisms in the treated cells. This approach targets specific proteins to control L. monocytogenes biofilm, providing valuable data for future research.

Phylogenetic Analysis and Genome-Wide Association Study Applied to an Italian Listeria monocytogenes Outbreak

Alexandra Chiaverini et al.

Summary: The study investigated a severe outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes ST7 strain in Central Italy, linked to a meat food-producing plant contaminated by the outbreak strain, which reemerged in the same region causing another listeriosis case. The epidemic and reemergent strains were genetically closer to a ST7 clone with different PFGE profiles, and were associated with the pork production chain. The persistence and reemergence of the outbreak were likely due to both the presence of truly persistent clones and the repeated introduction of new ones, along with the contribution of prophage genes promoting their survival. Despite no significant genomic differences between the outbreak and reemergent strains, transcriptional factor and phage genes associated with the phage LP-114 helped differentiate the related clones detected during the outbreak.

Proteomic Exploration of Listeria monocytogenes for the Purpose of Vaccine Designing Using a Reverse Vaccinology Approach

Shivani Srivastava et al.

Summary: This study focuses on predicting B cell epitopes for subunit vaccine design against Listeria monocytogenes using a reverse vaccinology approach. The top epitope FLKIDPPIL was identified as the best vaccine contender based on binding energy, non-toxicity, and population coverage investigation. Simulation showed the stability of the FLKIDPPIL-HLA DRB1_0101 complex, suggesting its potential as a remedy against listeriosis after further wet-lab and clinical trials.
