Fishery dynamics of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, a highly discarded bycatch species in the NW Mediterranean Sea

Joan Mir-Arguimbau et al.

Summary: This study characterized the fishery dynamics of blue whiting in the NW Mediterranean, and found that blue whiting population migrates to the demersal habitat in spring and adult individuals mainly inhabit the upper slope during the reproductive period. The decline in landings in recent years may be related to the absence of intense deep convection processes in winter and the impact of exploitation.

Temperature reduces fish dispersal as larvae grow faster to their settlement size

Nuria Raventos et al.

Summary: As ocean temperatures rise, temperate fish species are experiencing reduced dispersal potential and decreased pelagic larval duration. Settlement size appears to be less affected by temperature, while increasing temperatures lead to quicker larval growth to settlement size. This could result in an assemblage-wide reduction in larval dispersal across the Mediterranean Sea, potentially isolating populations as waters warm.

Trophic links between blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) larvae and the winter planktonic community in the NW Mediterranean Sea

Joan Mir-Arguimbau et al.

Summary: Blue whiting larvae in the NW Mediterranean showed a high feeding efficiency and dietary changes with development, shifting from small prey to larger, more energetic prey. Trophic position estimates of planktonic taxa suggested that blue whiting larvae are primary carnivores in the ecosystem.
