Review of rodent models of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Samantha L. Regan et al.

Summary: This study reviews the impact of genetic and environmental factors on the development of ADHD. Although there is no perfect rodent model, several models show promise. The genetic models mainly include rats and mice, while environmental factors include alcohol, nicotine, and pollutants. Future research should combine multiple gene knockouts and environmental factors to better understand the pathogenesis of ADHD.

Trace Amine-Associated Receptor 1 (TAAR1): A new drug target for psychiatry?

Seetal Dodd et al.

Summary: TAARs are a group of receptors with multiple subfamilies that play important roles in homeostasis, olfaction, and monoamine systems. They are potential therapeutic targets for various mental disorders and cancers. Modulators of TAAR1 show efficacy in animal models, but further research is needed to establish their applicability.

Animal models of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Vikrant Rahi et al.

Summary: ADHD is a heterogeneous neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by symptoms of hyperactivity, attention deficit, and impulsiveness, which can significantly impact academic, occupational, and social functioning. Currently, there are limited effective medications available to completely eliminate ADHD symptoms, making it essential to understand the neurochemical and genetic alterations that contribute to the progression of the disorder. Animal models serve as a valuable tool for studying the pathological mechanisms involved in disease progression and have good predictive validity for the development of new therapeutic interventions.

A new rat model of creatine transporter deficiency reveals behavioral disorder and altered brain metabolism

Lara Duran-Trio et al.

Summary: Creatine is crucial for tissues with high energy demand, and deficits in its synthesis or transport can lead to Cerebral Creatine Deficiency Syndromes. Among these syndromes, X-linked creatine transporter deficiency is the most prevalent with no effective treatment so far. The newly introduced Slc6a8(Y389C) KI rat model enriches the spectrum of CTD models and provides valuable insights into the pathology of this disorder, serving as the first animal model carrying a specific point mutation.

Considering sex as a biological variable will require a global shift in science culture

Rebecca M. Shansky et al.

Summary: For over half a century, male rodents have been the default model organism in preclinical neuroscience research, leading to higher misdiagnosis and adverse effects in women. Studying both sexes is crucial, but incentives and funding structures often discourage researchers. Calls for cultural and structural changes in research and evaluation processes are needed to create a more equitable knowledge base.

Role of trace amine-associated receptor 1 in the medial prefrontal cortex in chronic social stress-induced cognitive deficits in mice

Summary: The study highlights the essential role of TAAR1 in mediating cognitive impairments induced by chronic stress, suggesting that TAAR1 agonists may be uniquely useful for treating MDD-related cognitive impairments.

A single episode of stress during adolescence impairs short-term memory and increases risk behaviour in an animal model of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder

Icaro Raony et al.

Summary: The study found that a single episode of stress during adolescence can increase risk behavior and impair short-term memory in adult rats with ADHD, but does not alter locomotion. This suggests that stress during adolescence, even acute, can lead to long-term behavioral consequences in an animal model of ADHD.

Summary: TAAR1 is a potential target for the treatment of depression, but clinically used antidepressants do not require TAAR1 for their antidepressant properties. o-PIT is a useful tool for exploring the hypothermic and other functional antidepressant roles of TAAR1.
