Probabilistic human health risk assessment of groundwater contamination due to metal leaching: A case study of Indian dumping sites

Abhay Guleria et al.

Summary: In this study, a probabilistic human health risk assessment (HHRA) due to metal leaching was conducted for five major dumping sites in India, with results showing significant variation in hazard quotients at the fly-ash open dump in Nashik, indicating concerns for nearby residents. Variance attribution analysis revealed that body weight (BW) and exposure duration (ED) contributed significantly to uncertainties in estimated hazard quotients for both child and adult subpopulations. Further information on exposure duration of children and adults is needed for effective HHRA to assist risk managers.

Summary: Disposal of industrial waste affects the environment and human health, leading to contamination of surface and groundwater in the industrial region of Ranipet. Stringent monitoring of water quality and enforcement of waste disposal regulations are necessary to prevent further spread of contamination.

Fate and contaminant transport model-driven probabilistic human health risk assessment of DNAPL-contaminated site

Abhay Guleria et al.

Summary: This study calculated human health risk indexes driven by fate and contaminant transport models due to the presence of DNAPLs in the subsurface environment of an air force base in Florida, USA. It was found that transformed DNAPL compounds posed a higher and longer-lasting risk to human health compared to the parent DNAPL, emphasizing the need for a remediation plan for contaminated sites. Variance attribution analysis highlighted the importance of concentration, body weight, and exposure duration in the estimation of risk indexes when dealing with uncertainties in model parameters.

Status and associated human health risk of zinc accumulation in agricultural soils across China

Xingyuan Li et al.

Summary: This study found high levels of zinc accumulation in Chinese agricultural soils, with serious contamination in certain areas due to anthropogenic activities. The study provides valuable information for the management and prevention of zinc contamination in China's soils, highlighting the differences in zinc concentrations between different types of agricultural land uses.

Assessment of Human Health Risk of Chromium and Nitrate Pollution in Groundwater and Soil of the Matanza-Riachuelo River Basin, Argentina

Elina Ceballos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of hexavalent chromium and nitrate in polluted groundwater and soil on the health of inhabitants in the Matanza-Riachuelo River basin in Argentina. Results indicated that children and adults faced unacceptable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from chromium and nitrate in groundwater, with water ingestion being the main exposure route. Additionally, unacceptable risks of hexavalent chromium were found in soil exposure pathways, with dermal contact being the main route of exposure.

Evaluation of soil contamination due to crude E-waste recycling activities in the capital city of India

Shashi Arya et al.

Summary: The informal E-waste recycling sites in India, particularly in Delhi, are causing significant soil contamination with heavy metals exceeding WHO limits. Urgent actions are needed to control the situation, with phytoremediation and bioremediation being recommended to combat the accumulation of hazardous materials at contaminated sites.

Dynamic risk modeling of complex hydrocarbon production systems

Abbas Mamudu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a dynamic risk modeling strategy for a hydrocarbon sub-surface production system under a gas lift mechanism using a data-driven probabilistic methodology. The integrated approach of MLP-ANN model and BN technique offers an effective strategy to avoid production failure, monitor dynamic risks, and assist in production decision-making, especially in complex production systems.

Spatial distribution, ecological risk and sources of heavy metals in soils from a typical economic development area, Southeastern China

Qiumei Wu et al.

Summary: The study examined the distribution, ecological risk, and sources of heavy metals in soils in a typical coastal economic development area in Southeastern China. Industrial and residential soils showed higher enrichment of heavy metals compared to agricultural and fallow soils, with industrial emissions being the major driving factor.
