A review on catalytic pyrolysis for high-quality bio-oil production from biomass

Tewodros Kassa Dada et al.

Summary: This review article focuses on the application of catalytic pyrolysis for obtaining high-quality bio-oil and advanced techniques for bio-oil characterization. The results show that two-dimensional gas chromatography technique can identify a majority of chromatograph in bio-oil analysis, but combining with other analytical techniques is needed for accurate quantification of bio-oil components.

Cleaner production of catalytic thumba methyl ester (Biodiesel) from thumba seed oil (Citrullus Colocyntis) using TiO2 nanoparticles under intensified hydrodynamic cavitation

Abhijeet D. Patil et al.

Summary: This study explores the application feasibility of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in thumba oil transesterification. TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel method, with the smallest particle diameter of 8.42 nm achieved under optimized conditions. The effects of various operating variables on the triglyceride conversion in the hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) system were investigated. The highest conversion of 71.8% was achieved within 1 hour at 5 bar in the HC system under optimized process parameters. The use of this novel accelerated technique for thumba methyl ester preparation offers time and energy savings, making the operation more resource efficient.

In-situ catalytic upgrading of bio-oil from rapid pyrolysis of biomass over hollow HZSM-5 with mesoporous shell

Nichaboon Chaihad et al.

Summary: The issue of narrow micropores in traditional protonic type Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (HZSM-5) catalysts, which restrict the diffusion of large-molecular reactants/products, was tackled by preparing hollow HZSM-5 with a mesoporous shell. The efficient catalyst of Hollow(30)-TP showed significantly higher aromatic hydrocarbon yields for cellulose and hemicellulose compared to traditional HZSM-5, and exhibited excellent reusability and regeneration due to increased accessibility to acid sites.

Fast hydropyrolysis of biomass Conversion: A comparative review

Shinyoung Oh et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that fast hydropyrolysis is a promising technology for converting biomass into liquid fuels, producing more aromatic hydrocarbons and reducing the oxygen content of bio-oil. Current research focuses on both non-catalytic and catalytic fast hydropyrolysis processes, as well as efforts to combine fast hydropyrolysis with hydrotreatment processes. Future research directions and challenges in fast hydropyrolysis are also discussed.

Value-added products from pyrolysis of hydrochar derived from polyvinyl chloride and alkali coal

Peitao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aims to produce multi value-added products by pyrolysis of hydrochars obtained from cohydrothermal carbonization of PVC and alkali coal. The results show that the HTC process promoted the damage of oxygen functional groups, leading to improved fixed carbon content and calorific value after co-HTC. The pyrolysis of coal hydrochar was delayed due to changes in stable compositions in the coal structure, while the addition of PVC weakened this delay.
