The thermal niche and phylogenetic assembly of evergreen tree metacommunities in a mid-to-upper tropical montane zone

Arundhati Abin Das et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of frost and freezing temperatures on the taxonomic and phylogenetic structure of evergreen forests along a mid-upper montane elevation gradient in Western Ghats, India. The results indicate that frost filters out lowland tropical clades and allows extra-tropical lineages to establish at higher elevations, resulting in phylogenetic overdispersion in the shola metacommunity. Both minimum winter temperature and patch size play important roles in determining the metacommunity structure.

Freezing temperatures restrict woody plant recruitment and restoration efforts in abandoned montane pastures

Summary: Tropical montane forests are disappearing rapidly while housing unique biodiversity. The Hawaiian archipelago is a key example of high-elevation forests' importance for species conservation. Freezing temperatures may limit seedling growth, hindering the expansion of native woody plants into abandoned pastures.

The adaptive challenge of extreme conditions shapes evolutionary diversity of plant assemblages at continental scales

Summary: The tropical conservatism hypothesis suggests that biotic diversity is higher in tropical environments due to ancestral origins and limited colonization of colder temperate zones. The study found that extratropical dry biomes have the lowest evolutionary diversity, while tropical moist forests and temperate mixed forests harbor the highest. Expansion of arid environments may lead to higher loss of evolutionary diversity in both wet tropics and extratropical moist regions.

Evolutionary Diversity Peaks at Mid-Elevations Along an Amazon-to-Andes Elevation Gradient

Andy R. Griffiths et al.

Summary: Elevation gradients show complex diversity patterns, with evolutionary diversity peaking at mid-elevations while taxonomic richness remains stable from low to mid-elevations and then decreases with elevation. The distribution trends of younger and older lineages vary across elevation gradients.
