An estimation of the absolute number of axons indicates that human cortical areas are sparsely connected

Burke Q. Rosen et al.

Summary: In this study, the absolute number of axons linking cortical areas in humans was estimated using whole-cortex diffusion MRI (dMRI) connectome, calibrated with histologically measured callosal fiber density. The results suggest that the connections between cortical areas are sparse, but long-range connections may play a significant role in detailed information transmission.

A Whole-Cortex Probabilistic Diffusion Tractography Connectome

Burke Q. Rosen et al.

Summary: The WU-Minn Human Connectome Project (HCP) provides a dataset of advanced MRI techniques for over a thousand healthy subjects, with a focus on resting-state fMRI. A full-cortex connectome derived from probabilistic diffusion tractography revealed that connection strengths are lognormally distributed and decay exponentially with tract length, among other findings. Comparisons with existing connectivity matrices suggest that the dMRI connectome is more similar to cortico-cortico-evoked potential connectivity.

Travelling spindles create necessary conditions for spike-timing-dependent plasticity in humans

Charles W. Dickey et al.

Summary: Research shows that there is a strong tonic and phase-locked increase in firing and co-firing during spindles, especially those occurring with down-to-upstate transitions, within 25 ms. Co-firing, spindle co-occurrence, and spindle coherence are greatest within approximately 2 mm.
