Neither environmental unpredictability nor harshness predict reliance on alloparental care among families in Cebu, Philippines

Stacy Rosenbaum et al.

Summary: Alloparental caregiving is important for human reproductive strategies, especially in harsh and/or unpredictable environments. However, this study found that such environments do not predict within-population variation in alloparental care in a large-scale, industrialized society in the Philippines. Instead, factors such as socioeconomic status and household environment are more influential in predicting alloparental care use.

Early life adversity and males: Biology, behavior, and implications for fathers' parenting

Eileen M. Condon et al.

Summary: Fathers play a significant role in child development, but there is a lack of research on the effects of early life adversity on fathers' parenting. This review examines the impact of early life adversity on males in areas such as neurobiology, hormones, gene-environment interactions, and behavior. Based on the findings, a conceptual model is proposed to understand the biological and behavioral pathways through which early life adversity may influence fathers' parenting. Empirical studies are needed to improve understanding in this area and develop interventions to prevent intergenerational transmission of early life adversity.

A mechanism for population self-regulation: Social density suppresses GnRH expression and reduces reproductivity in voles

Phoebe D. Edwards et al.

Summary: Our research found that in high-density environments, meadow voles have a lower proportion of reproductive animals. Juvenile voles born at high densities showed reduced expression of GnRH in the hypothalamus, along with slightly lower faecal sex hormone metabolites. Additionally, female juvenile voles born at high densities had higher methylation levels at two CpG sites, while males did not, which aligns with prior observations.

Synchronous caregiving from birth to adulthood tunes humans' social brain

Adi Ulmer Yaniv et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of maternal contact and caregiving behavior on the development of the social brain in mammalian young, leading to long-term effects on adult sociality. Specifically in human adults, maternal-newborn contact and parenting behavior play a crucial role in shaping the sensitivity of the social brain, particularly in affect-specific empathy.

Fathering behavior, attachment, and engagement in childcare predict testosterone and cortisol

Lieselotte Ahnert et al.

Summary: The study found that fathers' engagement in childcare and attachment to the child were associated with a greater decrease in testosterone levels. Cuddling was negatively correlated with testosterone levels, while joint play and rough-and-tumble play showed enhancing effects on declining testosterone levels.

Fathers' care in context: 'facultative,' flexible fathers respond to work demands and child age, but not to alloparental help, in Cebu, Philippines

Stacy Rosenbaum et al.

Summary: The study evaluated whether paternal care in Cebu, the Philippines conforms to predictions derived from the facultative fathering hypothesis and life history theory. The findings suggest that men who work longer hours spend less time on childcare, and the time fathers spend on different types of caregiving changes as children age. Additionally, paternal care is complemented by alloparental care in this context, contradicting the predictions of the facultative fathering hypothesis.

Summary: Research suggests a link between home environment and children's outcomes, but parents also influence their children through both environment and genes. It is important to consider genetic influences when studying environmental effects, and genetic sensitive designs are ideal for addressing genetic confounding.
