Single-layered organic photovoltaics with double cascading charge transport pathways: 18% efficiencies

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: By using quaternary blends, double cascading energy level alignment is achieved in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic active layers, optimizing light absorption, carrier transport, and charge-transfer state energy levels for higher power conversion efficiencies. The chemical structures of donors and acceptors allow control over electronic structure and charge-transfer state energy levels, enabling manipulation of hole-transfer rates, carrier transport, and non-radiative recombination losses.

Direct observation of chemical short-range order in a medium-entropy alloy

Xuefei Chen et al.

Summary: The study provides direct experimental evidence of chemical short-range atomic-scale ordering (CSRO) in a VCoNi medium-entropy alloy through diffraction and electron microscopy analysis. The research demonstrates that using specific crystallographic directions can reveal CSRO in face-centred-cubic VCoNi concentrated solution, offering insights into atomic packing configuration and dislocation interactions enhanced by CSROs.

Understanding chemical short-range ordering/demixing coupled with lattice distortion in solid solution high entropy alloys

Q. F. He et al.

Summary: This work investigates the chemical short-range ordering (CSRO) or demixing in solid solution high entropy alloys (HEAs) using a generalized quasi-chemical solid solution model. Synchrotron diffraction experiments, Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations, and first principles calculations were conducted on the CoCrFeNi model alloy to study the development of local chemical environments after long time thermal annealing. The results show that the local chemical ordering or demixing in CoCrFeNi is not only affected by the heat of mixing between dislike atoms, but also coupled with local lattice distortion.

Hierarchical crack buffering triples ductility in eutectic herringbone high-entropy alloys

Peijian Shi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a directionally solidified eutectic high-entropy alloy with a hierarchically organized herringbone structure that reconciles crack tolerance and high elongation. The self-buffering herringbone material achieves an ultrahigh uniform tensile elongation while maintaining strength.

Simultaneously enhancing the ultimate strength and ductility of high-entropy alloys via short-range ordering

Shuai Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that short-range ordering in high-entropy alloys can lead to a pseudo-composite microstructure, with different types of clusters playing specific roles to enhance both strength and ductility. This provides a promising route for designing alloys with superior mechanical properties.
