Correlation between Emergency Medical Services Suspected COVID-19 Patients and Daily Hospitalizations

Matthew J. Levy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if EMS-identified Persons Under Investigation (PUI) for COVID-19 are linked to hospitalizations for COVID-19 disease, serving as an early indicator of hospital surge. Analysis of Maryland EMS data showed a strong correlation between EMS transports for PUIs and new COVID-19 hospitalizations, with the strongest correlation observed at a 9-day lag.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest care in Detroit

Shobi Mathew et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic in Detroit, the out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) rate increased by 62%, but there was no significant change in prehospital return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) rate. Despite the implementation of an early termination of resuscitation protocol, the ROSC rate remained similar.

Emergency Medical Services Responses to Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest and Suspected ST-Segment-Elevation Myocardial Infarction During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Los Angeles County

Jeffrey Eric Rollman et al.

Summary: During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, emergency medical services in Los Angeles County, CA experienced an increase in responses to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and a decrease in responses to ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Compared to 2018 and 2019, the proportion of OHCA patients who received defibrillation and had return of spontaneous circulation was lower after the implementation of California's stay-at-home order on March 19, 2020. Emergency medical services also saw a significant increase in dead on arrival cases in 2020 compared to previous years.
