A short-lived oxidation event during the early Ediacaran and delayed oxygenation of the Proterozoic ocean

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: The Ediacaran Period was characterized by major carbon isotope perturbations, including anomalies similar to the Shuram/DOUNCE anomaly at 570 Ma and the WANCE anomaly at 610 Ma. These anomalies were associated with expansions in oxygenated seawater and environmental perturbations. New uranium isotope data, as well as strontium and sulfur isotope data, provide evidence of environmental changes during these anomalies.

Experimental study of chromium (III) coprecipitation with calcium carbonate

Ziyao Fang et al.

Summary: Chromium isotope compositions in marine carbonates have been used to trace the evolution of oxygen levels in the atmosphere and ocean. Recent studies have shown that chromium in natural carbonates is mostly in the form of trivalent chromium (Cr(III)). However, the behavior of Cr(III) in carbonate deposition environments is still not well understood. This study conducted coprecipitation experiments to investigate the behavior of Cr(III) with calcium carbonate. The results suggest that Cr(III) is incompatible with the calcite crystal lattice and is mostly adsorbed on the crystal surface or exists as amorphous Cr hydroxide. The presence of Cr(III) can also affect the polymorph selection of calcium carbonate, hindering its transformation to calcite. The findings indicate that post-depositional processes can greatly influence the Cr isotope compositions in sedimentary carbonates, and caution should be taken when using Cr isotope compositions for paleoenvironment reconstruction.

Absence of hexavalent chromium in marine carbonates: implications for chromium isotopes as paleoenvironment proxy

Summary: The study found that Cr(III) is the dominant species in sedimentary rocks, indicating that Cr(VI) in seawater was reduced before or after carbonate precipitation, causing isotopic fractionation between seawater and carbonates.

Sulfur and oxygen isotopic compositions of carbonate associated sulfate (CAS) of Cambrian ribbon rocks: Implications for the constraints on using CAS to reconstruct seawater sulfate sulfur isotopic compositions

Haoran Ma et al.

Summary: Carbonate associated sulfate (CAS) is widely used to study the ancient seawater sulfur isotopic composition, but the variations in δS-34(CAS) values suggest different processes in marlstone and limestone layers. The lower δS-34(CAS) in marlstone may be influenced by benthic flux, while the higher values in limestone could be due to diagenetic processes. The study concludes that δS-34(CAS) may accurately reflect seawater sulfur isotopic composition when benthic flux and early diagenesis are not significant.

Orogenic quiescence in Earth's middle age

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the average thickness of active continental crust on Earth varies on billion-year time scales, with mountain-building processes closely related to nutrient cycling on Earth's surface. The formation of the Nuna-Rodinia supercontinent led to a gradual thinning of the crust, impacting ocean nutrient cycling and the evolution of life.

Strong local, not global, controls on marine pyrite sulfur isotopes

V Pasquier et al.

Summary: Understanding the variations in sulfur isotopic composition of sedimentary pyrite is essential due to the crucial role of sulfur biogeochemistry in regulating the Earth's surface oxidation state. Recent research reveals that local depositional conditions significantly impact the delta S-34(pyr) values, challenging the previous interpretation of stratigraphic variations as global biogeochemical cycling changes. The study demonstrates strong local controls on delta S-34(pyr) and calls for a reevaluation of using these variations to infer global changes in Earth's surface environment.

Precipitation of Marinoan cap carbonate from Mn-enriched seawater

Meng Ning et al.

Summary: The rapid diversification of eukaryotes after the Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation suggests a possible link between the extreme icehouse climate and biological evolution. The delayed cap carbonate precipitation post melting of the Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation indicates suboxic postglacial seawater enriched in Mn2+. Likely due to continuous hydrothermal Mn2+ flux for about 15 million years, the postglacial ocean was enriched in Mn, with potential remobilization of MnO2 from glacial sediments.

Sedimentary pyrite sulfur isotopes track the local dynamics of the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone

Virgil Pasquier et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that variations in sulfur isotope ratios (δS-34(pyr)) in Peruvian margin sediments are influenced by Oxygen Minimum Zone intensification/expansion and organic matter deposition. Higher microbial sulfate reduction rates result in more effective drawdown and S-34-enrichment of residual porewater sulfate and sulfide, which is preserved in pyrite. These findings emphasize the importance of local environmental changes in shaping sulfur isotope ratios.
