On crashworthiness behaviors of 3D printed multi-cell filled thin-walled structures

Kui Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, multi-cell filled thin-walled structures were prepared using fused deposition modeling by carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide. The crashworthiness behaviors of the structures were studied, and the effect of fillings on their performance was investigated. The results showed that increasing the filling density improved the specific energy absorption and crushing force efficiency. The circular filled structures exhibited higher specific energy absorption, and at high loading velocity, the energy absorption and crushing force efficiency of all structures decreased. The failure mode of the structures also changed from ductile damage to brittle fracture.

Mechanical behavior and damage kinetics of a unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminated composite under dynamic compressive loading

Wenbo Xie et al.

Summary: This work investigated the mechanical behavior and damage kinetics of a unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminated composite (CFRP) under dynamic compressive loading. Experimental tests were conducted using an Instron testing machine and a pulse-shaped split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. Digital image correlation (DIC) combined with ultra high-speed photography was used to study the deformation and failure process. The research established an empirical formula for dynamic compression strength and developed a simplified nonlinear visco-hyperelastic constitutive model to predict the mechanical behaviors. The findings contribute to the improvement of CFRP composite design subjected to high-speed impact loads.

Summary: The recent development of fibre composites is strong due to their high performance and durability. However, polymer-fibre composites manufactured through additive manufacturing (AM) have lower strength compared to traditional processes. This comprehensive review focuses on mechanical testing and performance analysis of polymer-fibre composites fabricated through AM, particularly fused deposition modelling (FDM).

Influence of residual stress and fluid-structure interaction on the impact behavior of fused filament fabrication components

Sumair Sunny et al.

Summary: This study examines the fluid-structure interaction behavior of cellular fused filament fabrication polymer components under high strain-rate impact conditions and the influence of residual stresses on stress states. Findings show that residual stresses significantly affect the stress-strain response during dynamic impact and must be considered along with fluid-structure interaction for accurate characterization of impact behavior. The 2-stage computational approach is validated by comparing numerical predictions with experimental measurements, demonstrating the importance of residual stresses and FSI in impact scenarios.

Summary: This study addresses the challenge of 3D printing with continuous fiber-reinforced thermoset composite by developing a 3D printer capable of printing a UV curable resin system reinforced with continuous carbon fiber. The variations of printed composites' mechanical properties depending on the fiber tow characteristic were investigated, with two different carbon fiber types and their associated tow twist count and sizing evaluated. Burn-off tests were used to determine the printed composites' final fiber volume fraction, and predicted strength and modulus values were compared against experimental values, showing good agreement for modulus but significant deviation for strength.
