Implementing lessons learned through occupational socialization theory to influence preservice teachers' subjective theories

Kelsey McEntyre et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of a secondary physical education methods course and early field experience, supplemented with reflective discussions using Twitter, on subjective theories of physical education. The findings suggest that the course organization and experiences challenged the preservice teachers' subjective theories and prompted them to reconsider what it means to teach physical education. Through developing relationships with instructors and peers, engaging in reflection, and gaining field experience, the preservice teachers recognized issues within the field of physical education and the ability of physical educators to work with and support youth beyond their coaching roles.
