Drug Resistance in Nontuberculous Mycobacteria: Mechanisms and Models

Saloni Saxena et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the rise in infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and their resistance to conventional antibiotics, proposing strategies to develop better therapies against them. It suggests accelerating the drug development pipeline by utilizing a combination of computational, laboratory and animal testing methods. The review also highlights the importance of understanding NTM virulence and developing new effective antimicrobial therapies.

Characterization of Clinical Isolates of Mycobacterium simiae Using Drug Susceptibility Tests and Molecular Analyses

Hoda Dezhkhi et al.

Summary: This study characterized 169 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium simiae using MIRU-VNTR typing and found that the strains were resistant to first line antimycobacterial agents. It was also discovered that M. simiae isolates exhibited diverse resistance patterns to different antibiotics. MIRU-VNTR analysis revealed a high level of diversity among the M. simiae isolates, grouping them into four clusters and two single types.

Mycobacterium simiae pulmonary infection: a case series and literature review

Hadi Lotfi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the clinical features of 20 patients with Mycobacterium simiae pulmonary infection in northeastern Iran, finding that the majority of patients were female with an average age of 55.1 years, and presenting symptoms mainly included severe cough and sputum production. Treatment primarily consisted of levofloxacin, clarithromycin, and co-trimoxazole.

A case of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium simiae in an elderly woman

Hadi Lotfi et al.

Summary: Mycobacterium simiae is an emerging pathogen in Iran with little data on drug susceptibility test available. A case study of multidrug-resistant M. simiae infection highlights the challenges in treatment. Antibiotic resistance testing is crucial for selecting appropriate treatment options.
