Analytical procedures for determination of phenolics active herbal ingredients in fortified functional foods: an overview

Beatrix Sik et al.

Summary: Fortification of foods with phenolic compounds is increasingly popular due to their beneficial physiological effects, but analyzing polyphenols in fortified foods faces challenges such as the complexity of food matrices and interactions with other food components. Various techniques, including liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and spectrophotometry, can be used for the analysis of polyphenols in fortified foods, each with its advantages and limitations.

Rainfall amount determines annual herb controls over soil seed bank and its similarity with vegetation in the Tengger Desert

Ya-Fei Shi et al.

Summary: Soil seed banks play a crucial role in maintaining and restoring degraded desert ecosystems. This study explores the year-to-year dynamics and species composition of the soil seed bank in the Tengger Desert in China. The results show that environmental factors, such as rainfall and microtopography, as well as plant life forms, significantly influence the species composition and abundance of the seed bank. Natural regeneration of degraded deserts may be limited by the lack of shrub and perennial herb seeds, highlighting the importance of human intervention and management to enhance seed abundance.

Effect of roasting on antioxidative properties, polyphenol profile and fatty acids composition of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seeds

Elfadil E. Babiker et al.

Summary: The study revealed that roasting hemp seeds for 14 minutes increased their nutritional and oxidative properties by improving oil, protein, potassium, magnesium, total phenolic, and flavonoid contents. Therefore, roasting for 14 minutes could be considered as the most suitable duration for processing hemp seeds based on the measured parameters.

Impact of Zinc and/or Herbal Mixture on Ruminal Fermentation, Microbiota, and Histopathology in Lambs

Daniel Petric et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of diets containing organic zinc and a mixture of medicinal herbs on ruminal microbial fermentation and histopathology in lambs. While the diets affected certain parameters of ruminal fermentation in vitro, the impact was not confirmed in vivo, possibly due to adaptation of the ruminal microbiota to the zinc-supplemented diets. Long-term supplementation of diets combining zinc and medicinal herbs may negatively affect the health of the ruminal epithelium of lambs.

Targeted and semi-untargeted determination of phenolic compounds in plant matrices by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Eleonora Oliva et al.

Summary: In this study, a targeted and semi-targeted HPLC-MS/MS approach was used to quantify and tentatively identify phenolic compounds in three different plant matrices. The extraction and clean-up steps were optimized to minimize interference, resulting in a sensitive and robust quantitative analysis. The study successfully identified and quantified various phenolic compounds in the plant matrices, demonstrating good analytical performance.
