The Chinese pine genome and methylome unveil key features of conifer evolution

Shihui Niu et al.

Summary: This study provides important resources and insights into conifer evolution and further research on conifer adaptation and development. The researchers found that the large genome size of conifers is mainly due to intergenic regions and transposable element content. Large genes with long introns exhibit higher expression levels. Additionally, the expansion of gene families in conifers is mainly related to stress responses.

The effect of ethylene on squalene and β-sitosterol biosynthesis and its key gene network analysis in Torreya grandis nuts during post-ripening process

Yuanyuan Hu et al.

Summary: Research found that ethylene not only promoted the post-ripening process of Torreya grandis nuts, but also increased the accumulation of squalene by inducing gene expression in the mevalonate pathway. Additionally, ethylene treatment enhanced the accumulation of other sterols while inhibiting gene expression in the beta-sitosterol biosynthesis pathway. Co-expression and correlation analysis revealed a regulatory framework for the transcriptional regulation of squalene and beta-sitosterol biosynthesis genes under ethylene treatment.

The Research Progress of Taxol in Taxus

Fenjuan Shao et al.

Summary: Taxol production in Taxus is influenced by a variety of factors including species, age, tissues, light, moisture levels, temperature, soil fertility, and microbes. Research focuses on finding ways to increase taxol production and has explored various methods such as understanding the biosynthesis pathway, in vitro production, and the application of multi-omits approaches. Future efforts should concentrate on identifying unknown enzymes, establishing genetic transformation systems, and understanding regulatory mechanisms to enhance taxol yield.

Functional Characteristics Analysis of Dehydrins in Larix kaempferi under Osmotic Stress

Xuechun Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified four dehydrins in Larix kaempferi that enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stress by binding DNA in the nucleus and cytoplasm, ultimately helping plants survive from heavy stress. These dehydrins played similar roles in the response to osmotic stress and assisted in the adaptation of L. kaempferi to the arid and cold winter of northern China.

Identification and Functional Analysis of ThADH1 and ThADH4 Genes Involved in Tolerance to Waterlogging Stress in Taxodium hybrid 'Zhongshanshan 406'

Lei Xuan et al.

Summary: The Taxodium hybrid 'Zhongshanshan 406' has been widely used in wetland afforestation in China due to its outstanding flooding tolerance. The study identified and characterized two ADH genes-ThADH1 and ThADH4, which were found to play a key role in the adaptation to anaerobic conditions. Overexpression of these genes in Populus improved waterlogging tolerance, indicating their crucial role in plant survival under low-oxygen conditions.

Evolutionary history of the mediterranean Pinus halepensis-brutia species complex using gene-resequencing and transcriptomic approaches

Sanna Olsson et al.

Summary: The evolutionary histories of Pinus halepensis and Pinus brutia exhibit contrasting genetic characteristics, with P. brutia showing higher genetic diversity and lack of sub-structure, while P. halepensis displays three distinct genetic clusters. The timing of the species complex history suggests that the two species diverged at the end of the tertiary period, with differing responses to changing climatic conditions leading to their current geographic distributions, demographic histories, and genetic patterns. Multiple glacial-interglacial cycles during the Quaternary further affected the expansion of P. brutia in the Middle East and bottleneck events in P. halepensis, particularly impacting the Western genetic pool of the species during the last glaciations.

Tariq Pervaiz et al.

Summary: The study revealed that under drought conditions, the photosynthetic rate and H2O conductance of Pinus tabuliformis would decrease, while the intercellular CO2 concentration would increase. Transcriptome analysis identified multiple drought-responsive genes, with a majority having homologous conservation with Arabidopsis and some being drought response genes in Arabidopsis as well.

Identification of microRNAs and their target genes related to needle discoloration of evergreen tree Chinese cedar (Cryptomeria fortunei) in cold winters

Yingting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified a possible role of miRNA-regulated pathways in needle color in Cryptomeria fortunei, a conifer tree species. A miRNA-target pigment biosynthesis regulatory network was constructed, with miRNA-MYBs confirmed as key regulators of needle discoloration. These findings offer new insight into posttranscriptional regulatory mechanisms in gymnosperms and may contribute to genetic improvement of evergreen C. fortunei needles mediated by miRNAs.

Candidate regulators and target genes of drought stress in needles and roots of Norway spruce

Julia C. Haas et al.

Summary: Drought stress has significant impacts on seedling establishment, survival, and productivity of plants, particularly coniferous tree species. Norway spruce seedlings show reversible physiological plasticity in response to drought, with changes in shoot water potential and ABA levels. Root and needle transcriptional responses to drought differ, with roots showing more down-regulation of growth-related genes. Comparison with previously studied drought-response genes in Arabidopsis thaliana shows both conservation and divergence in transcriptional response in P. abies, highlighting the importance of profiling both above- and belowground tissues to understand drought response mechanisms in coniferous species.
