Phosphorus Acquisition and Utilization in Plants

Hans Lambers

Summary: Significant progress has been made on plant phosphorus nutrition at the molecular level, but there is a need to integrate information from various disciplines. Strategies to mobilize phosphorus in low-P soil are found to be more effective than mycorrhizal strategies. Understanding the trade-offs of different investment patterns in phosphorus fractions is crucial for optimizing plant growth.

Agroecosystem diversification with legumes or non-legumes improves differently soil fertility according to soil type

Marie Sauvadet et al.

Summary: Diversifying plant communities through crop rotation or agroforestry shows positive effects on soil fertility in tropical agroecosystems, with outcomes varying depending on soil type and presence of legumes in the community. Legumes are beneficial for volcanic soils, while communities without legumes are more effective in Ferralsols. Overall, multifactorial and multi-sites experiments are crucial for designing optimal plant diversification in agroecological systems.

Long-term increased grain yield and soil fertility from intercropping

Xiao-Fei Li et al.

Summary: The study shows that intercropping can increase grain yields and stability, with yield benefits increasing over time. Long-term experiments on soils of differing fertility found that intercropped systems had on average 22% higher grain yields than monocultures and greater year-to-year stability.

Belowground facilitation and trait matching: two or three to tango?

Rui-Peng Yu et al.

Summary: High biodiversity enhances ecosystem functions, with belowground facilitation mechanisms operating through 'giving-receiving feedbacks' involving direct effects via root exudates, signals, and root trait plasticity, as well as indirect biotic facilitation. These mechanisms must impact biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships through specific combinations of matching traits.

THE 4C APPROACH AS A WAY TO UNDERSTAND SPECIES INTERACTIONS DETERMINING INTERCROPPING PRODUCTIVITY

Eric Justes et al.

Summary: Modern agriculture needs to develop transition pathways towards agroecological, resilient, and sustainable farming systems, with diversification of cropping systems such as intercropping playing a key role. The 4C approach helps assess the performance of arable intercropping versus classical sole cropping by understanding the use of abiotic resources.
