Strawberry-Derived Exosome-Like Nanoparticles Prevent Oxidative Stress in Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

Francesca Perut et al.

Summary: EPDENs isolated from strawberries have been shown to have potential health-promoting activities, including preventing oxidative stress in human mesenchymal stromal cells. The presence of vitamin C in the EPDEN membrane may contribute to this effect, along with the small RNAs and miRNAs found in the cargo. These findings suggest that Fragaria-derived EPDENs may serve as nanoshuttles in food with bioactive properties.

Plant Extracellular Vesicles and Nanovesicles: Focus on Secondary Metabolites, Proteins and Lipids with Perspectives on Their Potential and Sources

Eric Woith et al.

Summary: While human EVs have been extensively studied, plant-derived EVs have received less attention. This study introduces plant cell suspension culture as a new source for plant EVs and nanovesicles, revealing properties and mechanisms similar to animal cell-derived exosomes and microvesicles. Proteins present in plant EVs indicate potential mechanisms for cell wall passage and suggest similarities in EV secretion mechanisms between plant and animal cells.

Summary: Plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PDENs) are small vesicles released by multivesicular bodies to regulate immunity and gene expression. They have potential health benefits and can be extracted from plant materials using various techniques. However, their potency as a functional food ingredient requires further research due to sensitivity to storage and processing conditions.
