First-Principles Density Limit Scaling in Tokamaks Based on Edge Turbulent Transport and Implications for ITER

M. Giacomin et al.

Summary: A first-principles scaling law, based on turbulent transport considerations, and a multimachine database of density limit discharges from different tokamaks, shows the relationship between boundary turbulent transport and plasma collisionality, which determines the maximum achievable density in tokamaks. This study predicts a significantly larger safety margin for ITER compared to the Greenwald empirical scaling in case of unintentional high-to-low confinement transition.

Turbulent broadening of electron heat-flux width in electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical scrape-off layer model

N. R. Mandell et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that electromagnetic effects can moderately increase cross field transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) in high-beta regimes, leading to broadening of the electron heat-flux width on the endplates.

The GBS code for the self-consistent simulation of plasma turbulence and kinetic neutral dynamics in the tokamak boundary

M. Giacomin et al.

Summary: This paper describes a new version of the GBS code that extends the simulation domain to encompass the entire plasma volume and introduces a toroidal coordinate system for increased flexibility. A new iterative solver for Poisson and Ampere equations is implemented, leading to faster code execution. The self-consistent kinetic neutral model is optimized for different magnetic configurations. The numerical implementation is verified using the method of manufactured solutions. A simulation of a TCV tokamak discharge is presented as an example.

Investigation of the density shoulder formation by using self-consistent simulations of plasma turbulence and neutral kinetic dynamics

D. Mancini et al.

Summary: Simulations of plasma turbulence in a lower single-null magnetic configurations show that increased core fuelling leads to changes in plasma scrape-off layer (SOL) density and temperature profile, consistent with experimental observations. The increase of far SOL density at high-fuelling rates is mainly caused by the strong decrease of parallel transport, due to the cooling of electrons resulting from ionization events. The formation of a density shoulder in high-fuelling scenarios is also observed, indicating the impact of core fuelling on plasma dynamics.

Theory-based scaling laws of near and far scrape-off layer widths in single-null L-mode discharges

M. Giacomin et al.

Summary: This study analytically derived theory-based scaling laws for the near and far scrape-off layer (SOL) widths in L-mode diverted tokamak discharges using a two-fluid model. The results were compared to simulations and experimental measurements, showing good agreement and highlighting the need for a large multi-machine database for far SOL decay lengths.

The separatrix operational space of ASDEX Upgrade due to interchange-drift-Alfven turbulence

T. Eich et al.

Summary: The efficient operation of a tokamak is limited by several constraints, which can be derived through a combination of dimensionless parameters describing interchange-drift-Alfven turbulence. The operational space at the separatrix of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is presented in terms of an electron density and temperature existence diagram. The derived density limits are compared against Greenwald scaling, and the power threshold and role of ion heat flux for the transition to high confinement are discussed.
