Growth laws and self-similarity in the confined mixing zone of unstratified and strongly stably stratified isokinetic mixing-layers past a splitter plate

R. Kapulla et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the velocity and mixing scalar field of turbulent wake flows downstream of a slender splitter plate under unstratified and strongly stably stratified conditions. The results showed self-similarity in the development of the mixing zone for different conditions, and agreed well with theoretical models. The study is important for understanding the development and mixing processes of turbulent wake flows.

Forced Oscillations of a Pseudoshock in Transonic Gas Flow in a Diffuser

I. I. Lipatov et al.

Summary: The study utilizes a mathematical model based on the two-layer flow representation to describe shock-wave structures in channels and nozzles with variable cross-sections. Numerical simulations using the unsteady pseudoshock model are conducted, and the model is validated through comparison with experimental data.

The effect of Schmidt number on gravity current flows: The formation of large-scale three-dimensional structures

C. R. Marshall et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of Schmidt number on constant-influx solute-based gravity currents and reveals that increasing Schmidt number leads to significant structural changes, not observed with increased Reynolds number in the considered range. Recommendations are made regarding lower Schmidt number assumptions to reduce computational costs.

Large eddy simulation of the variable density mixing layer

J. X. Huang et al.

Summary: In this paper, large eddy simulations of variable density mixing layers are conducted to capture the flow physics present in laboratory flow. Regardless of the inflow condition used, the change in growth rate of the mixing layer caused by the density ratio is captured, and the spacing of the large-scale spanwise structure is found to be a function of the density ratio of the flow. Detailed simulations show that the streamwise vortex structure in the mixing layer depends on the nature of the imposed inflow condition, with different inflow disturbances leading to different structures.
