Eulerian and Lagrangian transport by shallow-water breaking waves

Zhihua Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mass and Lagrangian transport, kinematic and dynamic characteristics of shallow-water breaking waves, with a focus on wave breaking and jet impingement processes. A multiphase Navier-Stokes flow model is developed to track the origin and trajectory of the jet and splash-up. The model is validated against experimental data and used to study the mass transport and origin of the jet and splash-up. The study also explores the characteristics of different types of breaking waves under various wave steepness and beach slopes, and provides detailed analyses of the jet impingement, velocity, pressure, vorticity, and turbulence fields during wave breaking.

On the scattering of focused wave by a finite surface-piercing circular cylinder: A numerical investigation

Songtao Chen et al.

Summary: This study numerically simulates the nonlinear wave-structure interaction and identifies the scattered waves within the drag-inertia regime at high frequencies. By establishing a high-fidelity numerical wave tank, the authors successfully simulate the wave scattering phenomenon in extreme wave conditions and analyze the flow mechanisms of different types of scattered waves using detailed flow field data.

Wind-induced changes to shoaling surface gravity wave shape

Thomas Zdyrski et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the combined effect of shoaling and wind-forcing on wave shape in the near-shore environment. By using a variable-coefficient KdV-B equation, the evolution of the wave profile is described and it is found that wind has a significant impact on wave peak narrowing, platform formation, and the width of the prebreaking zone. The numerical results are in qualitative agreement with laboratory observations, suggesting that the equation captures the essential aspects of wind-induced effects on shoaling wave shape.

Laboratory experiments of surf zone dynamics under on- and offshore wind conditions

Damien Sous et al.

Summary: This paper presents laboratory experiments investigating the impact of onshore and offshore wind conditions on nearshore wave dynamics. The results show that wind conditions can delay or promote wave breaking, as well as flatten or steepen the waves. Using linear and cnoidal wave models, the study found that adding wind effects can describe the wind impact in wave nearshore models, despite experimental limitations.

Wind-induced changes to surface gravity wave shape in shallow water

Thomas Zdyrski et al.

Summary: Wave shape, influenced by wind, can vary in shallow water depending on wind speed and direction. Onshore wind increases wave energy and skewness while decreasing asymmetry, with the opposite effect seen for offshore wind.

Rogue wave generation in wind-driven water wave turbulence through multiscale phase-amplitude coupling, phase synchronization, and self-focusing by curved crests

Ji-Lin Jou et al.

Summary: RWEs, localized high amplitude extreme events, uncertainly emerge in various nonlinear waves with different generation mechanisms in 1D and 2D systems. Studies have mainly focused on RWEs in weakly disordered wave states dominated by a single scale, but to a much lesser extent on wave turbulence with multiscale excitations.

Scaling effects on the free surface backward facing step flow

Summary: The study on wave formation behind the free surface backward facing step (FSBFS) shows that the wave shape cannot be solely characterized by the Froude number. Different conditions of step draught and inflow boundary layer profiles lead to variations in wave characteristics.
