Time-reversal symmetry breaking and emergence in driven-dissipative Ising models

Daniel A. Paz et al.

Summary: Fluctuation-dissipation relations (FDRs) and time-reversal symmetry (TRS) are broken even at or near criticality in driven-dissipative systems, despite a modified form of FDR and TRS still holding. This has drastic consequences for correlation and response functions as well as Onsager reciprocity relations. At criticality, TRS remains broken even in the weakly-dissipative limit.

Dynamical scaling of correlations generated by short- and long-range dissipation

K. Seetharam et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal spreading of correlations in an ensemble of spins due to dissipation and discovers a novel pattern related to the dissipative nature and spatial profiles of the channel. Additionally, the study makes a methodological contribution by generalizing nonequilibrium spin-wave theory and deriving equations of motion for translationally invariant spin chains in dissipative systems.

Correlation engineering via nonlocal dissipation

K. Seetharam et al.

Summary: Controlling the spread of correlations in quantum many-body systems is a challenging task in quantum science and technology. In this study, the use of dissipation for engineering various spatiotemporal correlation profiles was demonstrated. By implementing dissipation with different spatial profiles in cold atoms trapped in an optical cavity, it was shown that correlations can be created or destroyed by carefully choosing the external field and spatial distribution. The results indicate the potential of nonlocal dissipation in manipulating the dynamics of quantum information in far-from-equilibrium scenarios, with applications in quantum metrology, state preparation, and transport.

Bidirectional dynamic scaling in an isolated Bose gas far from equilibrium

Jake A. P. Glidden et al.

Summary: Understanding and classifying non-equilibrium many-body phenomena analogously to the classification of equilibrium states of matter into universality classes is an outstanding problem in physics. Recent theoretical work and experimental evidence suggest that isolated many-body systems far from equilibrium exhibit dynamic self-similar scaling, implying the existence of a far-from-equilibrium universality class. The observation of bidirectional dynamic scaling in an isolated quench-cooled atomic Bose gas highlights the self-similar transport behavior in momentum space, independent of interparticle interactions.

Programmable interactions and emergent geometry in an array of atom clouds

Avikar Periwal et al.

Summary: Interactions play a crucial role in controlling the flow of information and creating correlations in many-body quantum systems. By programming non-local interactions in an array of atomic ensembles within an optical cavity, researchers have been able to access effective geometries with different dimensions and topologies than the physical geometry of the array. This work has implications for simulating frustrated magnets, investigating quantum optimization paradigms, and engineering entangled resource states for sensing and computation.

Emerging Dissipative Phases in a Superradiant Quantum Gas with Tunable Decay

Francesco Ferri et al.

Summary: By manipulating the drives and losses of a quantum gas, this study demonstrates the competition between coherent dynamics and dissipation, showcasing the transition between a superradiant phase and a normal phase, as well as the emergence of multistability. The findings provide insights into squeezing in non-Hermitian systems, quantum jumps in superradiance, and dynamical spin-orbit coupling in a dissipative setting.

Observation of a Dissipative Time Crystal

Hans Kessler et al.

Summary: This study represents the first experimental realization of a time crystal stabilized by dissipation. The period doubled switching between distinct checkerboard density wave patterns in a driven open atom-cavity system is induced by controlled cavity dissipation, cavity-mediated interactions, and external driving. The research demonstrates the robustness of this dynamical phase against changes in system parameters and temporal perturbations of the driving.

Driven-dissipative Ising model: An exact field-theoretical analysis

Daniel A. Paz et al.

Summary: Driven-dissipative many-body systems are difficult to analyze due to their nonequilibrium dynamics, dissipation, and many-body interactions. In this paper, we developed an exact field-theoretical analysis and a diagrammatic representation of a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model, showing critical behavior, finite-size scaling, and the effective temperature near phase transitions. The study revealed distinct critical behaviors at phase transitions, with overdamped and underdamped dynamics depending on the dissipative critical points.

Quantum aging and dynamical universality in the long-range O(N → ∞) model

Jad C. Halimeh et al.

Summary: This paper investigates aging and dynamic universality in the d-dimensional O(N) model with long-range coupling and in the mean-field limit N -> infinity. The study reveals the emergence of nonlinear light cones as an immediate consequence of long-range coupling, and identifies rich scaling behavior in correlation and response functions. A notable finding is the decay of correlation function outside the quench light cone while increasing polynomially with total time after quench, with equilibration of two-time response function at all distances for short-time differences even outside the light cone. The analytical findings are in excellent agreement with exact numerics, serving as a useful benchmark for modern experimental platforms with long-range interactions.
