Myocardial deformation assessed by CMR in children after multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C)

Sylvia Krupickova et al.

Summary: This study found that myocardial deformation indices measured by CMR are within normal range in the vast majority of patients within a few weeks after the onset of MIS-C. However, when compared to healthy controls, all strain parameters were lower in patients.

Midterm Outcomes and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging following Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

Summary: At midterm follow-up visits, most patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children showed resolution of left ventricular dysfunction and coronary aneurysms. Late gadolinium enhancement was not observed in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

Longitudinal Assessment of Global and Regional Left Ventricular Strain in Patients with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C)

Michael He et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term cardiac function in MIS-C patients and found that left ventricular global longitudinal and circumferential strain were impaired in the acute phase, gradually recovered in the chronic phase, but some regional segments still showed damage, which might be a marker for future adverse events.

Echocardiographic Findings and Correlation with Laboratory Values in Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Associated with COVID-19

Ahmet Vedat Kavurt et al.

Summary: Cardiac involvement is a common and serious issue in MIS-C, with ventricular systolic dysfunction recovering during hospitalization and persisting LV diastolic dysfunction in the reduced LVEF group at discharge. Coronary artery involvement was rare in the acute phase of the disease, and there is a correlation between LV systolic dysfunction and markers of inflammation and cardiac biomarkers in MIS-C patients.

A national consensus management pathway for paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with COVID-19 (PIMS-TS): results of a national Delphi process

Rachel Harwood et al.

Summary: PIMS-TS is a newly discovered condition associated with COVID-19, and a national consensus management pathway has been developed for UK clinicians caring for affected children. The guidance emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary team in decision-making and recommends treatment options including supportive care, immunoglobulin, steroids, and biological therapies. This guidance provides a solid framework for clinicians caring for children with PIMS-TS in the UK and will be updated based on future evidence.

Characteristics and Outcomes of US Children and Adolescents With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Compared With Severe Acute COVID-19

Leora R. Feldstein et al.

Summary: Comparing the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with MIS-C and COVID-19 can help distinguish between the two conditions and improve health outcomes. Patterns of clinical presentation and organ system involvement were identified in this case series, providing valuable information for differentiation of MIS-C and COVID-19.

Summary: This study analyzed inflammatory markers in children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) compared to those with COVID-19, showing significant differences in severity among MIS-C patients. The measurement of inflammatory markers may assist clinicians in accurately evaluating and diagnosing MIS-C and associated disorders.

Echocardiographic Indicators Associated with Adverse Clinical Course and Cardiac Sequelae in Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children with Coronavirus Disease 2019

Yamuna Sanil et al.

Summary: The study found that impaired ventricular function measures in MIS-C patients at initial presentation were associated with adverse clinical course and cardiac sequelae. Lower LVA4LS was correlated with higher clinical markers and longer hospital stay, and could predict the risk of abnormal cardiac function at 10-week follow-up.

Short-term outcomes in children recovered from multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection

Summary: MIS-C in children associated with COVID-19 is a newly recognized potentially life-threatening condition. This study included 21 children meeting the WHO criteria for MIS-C, with all children exhibiting a hyper-inflammatory state and a subset having low ejection fraction. Timely and adequate management resulted in full recovery without sequelae in the majority of cases at a median follow-up of 15 weeks.

Early Echocardiographic and Cardiac MRI Findings in Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

Domenico Sirico et al.

Summary: In this study, early cardiac abnormalities in MIS-C patients were described using STE and CMR. Some patients required ICU admission, but all patients survived. Most patients presented cardiovascular symptoms and Kawasaki Disease-like symptoms, while a quarter showed myocardial necrosis markers and non-ischemic LGE on CMR. These findings support the hypothesis of a post-viral immune-mediated myocarditis-like pathogenesis.
